Hi-

The most interesting part of this guy’s case is the hand printing, right? The "bloody print" thing is hokey. Nobody has yet explained why you reverse the print before you compare it other than the fact that if is inconveniently a mirror image of the one you have. The resemblance to the sketch is only a start and the code thing may be one of those strange coincidences that follow certain suspects around.

Mike

Agreed, about the reversing of the print. It doesn’t make sense, unless there is a process I am unaware of — it seems forced, in order to make a match. I also think the author gives too much weight to the psychological profile of Best Jr., IMO.

I am nearly done reading the book. Trying to keep an open mind about the suspect — regardless of the authors’ need to be right, and of weigh-ins in the media. Not easy — the book’s bias is painful.

The resemblance to the sketch is only a start and the code thing may be one of those strange coincidences that follow certain suspects around. The 340 and "My name is.." "solutions" are laughable without a PATTERN of some kind to them.

There is no evidence that Anton Lavey or Satanism were involved in the Z case (in fact he turned one of his members in to Avery at one point!). The innuendo about Rick Marshall is irrelevant unless you have proof that they were accomplices. Everyone apparently knew Darlene–Allen was at her party, Gyke supposedly knew her, etc. He used to hum the Mikado. But then Allen used to mutter "Tit willow" to himself three times to relieve stress. That is all sh*t you throw at the wall and hope some of it sticks.

Mike

I haven’t read the book but I honestly think Mr. Stewart seems totally sincere in the video I’ve seen i.e. he believes what he’s presenting and is not necessarily presenting it just for fame & fortune like a few others who shall not be named. I feel for him being abandoned by his father and discovering his shady history. That said, beyond his good resemblance to the Stine sketches, I’m really seeing little else to rule his father in as a suspect.

The basic premise seems to be:

-Zodiac was a bad guy
-My father was a bad guy
-My father looks just like Zodiac

I certainly understand the initial suspicions here but this looks like yet another case of someone seeking to support a preconceived suspicion at all costs while throwing objectivity out the window. Presented as a theory here, it would be interesting to explore. Presented as a definitive solution to the case in book form… ZZZ…

WC can you tell me how your last couple of posts on this thread contribute to the conversation? You make up little dramas that are sarcastic and mocking towards people who have an opinion different than your own but if someone does a similar thing to ideas and theories you propose you are completely indignant and cry foul. Try to rein in your criticism and direct it in a more constructive direction, please.

Anything new going on with Best Jr, or is this starting to go away already?

This has all the telltale signs of a money grab. It will be interesting to see if it actually makes money though. It probably would have been a more compelling story if he just focused on the search to find his father, instead of sensationalizing it. I think he had a few facts about his biological father that tenuously tied him to the zodiac, and a photo that looked kind of like the composite, and saw dollar signs. From the reviews I’m reading on this thread, I’m doubtful I’ll be reading this one.

As I have been saying all along, this is simply a money grab, based on zero evidence, and by the time the dust settles, the Author and publisher will make some $$$.

Even the writing examiner that examined Best’s writing has a book deal

Here’s the link on the Book written by the handwriting expert, who examined this POI’s handwriting. Interesting timing as both books are released the same time. Never heard of this handwriting expert, has anyone else?

How can this examiner justify his findings based off of that marriage certificate?

Now, morf is being asked to share a copy of the ss application so the author can examine that too. What does THAT tell you? First off, he didn’t think of things like this himself in. One would need the most information possible in order to make an educated conclusion. Secondly, using others copies? Even us amateurs know you get as close to an original copy as possible. And while we all mess around with online versions, a true pro would not.

Then to write ANOTHER book? Please! It just makes me cringe.

Wait… the document examiner is publishing a book about how he helped solve the case? I may need to reconsider my post about the sincerity of this presentation. I honestly find it sad that this case bursts into headlines every year or two because of someone screaming "Zodiac case solved!" at the top of their lungs. I guess "I BELIEVE THAT MY FATHER MIGHT BE THE ZODIAC KILLER" would just make for a lousy newspaper headline and book title.

I have not read this book, and don’t plan to either, but I did want to comment on the "money grab" ideas. Quoting part of a post from earlier in this thread:

The timing of this book seems a little off to me. The picture of this suspect seems a good likeness, although a weight issue exists clearly. However this book looks likely to sell millions and one has to question: if DNA could eventually rule in or rule out Earl Van Best Jr to the Zodiac crimes, it is fairly clear to me that this man is a wild goose chase. By the time we have any DNA comparisons, if at all, the book will have generated massive sales and if any DNA results prove negative, the book sales will flatline and start to gather dust.

I don’t know Stewart’s motivations, although he seemed sincere in his beliefs in the interviews I have seen. But if he is "in it for the money" I don’t think he will be making much.

There is just no way that this book of his will have "massive sales" and "sell millions" of copies. Since he is an unknown first time author writing to a very niche market (even though he has had good publicity and made the rounds of news programs) I would guess that if he did really well he might sell 20,000 copies at best. And maybe make $5000 or so, if he managed to get a really good publishing deal and high royalties.

Writing and publishing books is just not as lucrative as some people might think. Unless one’s name is JK Rowling or Stephen King or someone on the bestseller lists, there just isn’t any money in it.

I’m not making apologies or excuses for the guy, I don’t know his motivations. But I don’t think he’ll be getting rich from it.

I don’t know how much $$ he is making, but he is getting some major face & air time, he’s all over the place, and so is the story. The publicity machine is running on all cylinders for sure. Hey, if he gets a dollar a book, and sells a million,or $2 a book and selling 500k copies, that’s not too shabby-of course, his reputation is shot, but at that point, he may not care.

The poster annie1004 over at Tom’s just posted that Gary Stewart will be on Ronn Owens KGO Radio show Tuesday the 20th. KGO is a SF Bay Area AM station that has been around forever and Owens is a respected radio personality. His show is three hours, 9am to noon pacific time, and I have no idea where in that time slot he will do the interview with Stewart. Here is a link to Ronn Owens page with a link to listen live at the top.

PS This is a call-in show so get your questions ready!!
