I majored in Psychology for three years before switching and have taken a few Criminology courses. Granted it was a while back, but I remember learning that the term sociopath was just a more contemporary way of saying psychopath. In other words, I thought they were interchangeable. Turns out there are not so nuanced differences between the two words, and I’ve been using sociopath when I should have been saying psychopath the entire time. Apparently a psychopath is a monster on a whole other level than the sociopath and the antisocial personality. And when we are talking about Z we are discussing a psychopath. Just wanted to clear that up. Ah semantics
There’s not really a difference, but they both are also not really a thing according to psychologists.
Psychopathy is just a generalized term used by non psychologists to refer to violent criminal’s with personality disorders. Sociopathy is an outdated term for Antisocial Personality Disorder, but is also a description of General Personality Disorders.
I was wondering this myself. In England they use them interchangeably.
A sociopath can feel for certain people.
A psychopath cannot.
