Absolutely, and I am going to list several reasons. First and foremost is to provide "closure" for the families.

But there is also, IMHO, a very important reason to solve it for the future. No, I don’t think Zodiac is alive and I certainly don’t think he is still killing. However, once the case can be solved, there is a lot to learn about what went into making him do what he did. Years ago (15+) I read the "new" profiling books, primarily by John Douglas, written after interviewing several serial killers and finding patterns in the investigations. While a lot has been modified, many techniques were extraordinarily helpful- for example, holding a vigil and watching the crowd as the perp often shows up. They discovered many times they like to put themselves into the investigation and feel important.

A fascinating and tragic story that you may have seen on TV (48 Hours or one of those type shows) happened near where I grew up and the killer was only 13! Not my fave info source, but here are the basics: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Smith_(murderer ) He even went so far as to keep showing up and talking to police about the crime. Yes, I truly believe he was a serial killer in the making and should never get out of prison, but we will see.

As far as Z goes, if it was Ross Sullivan, I wonder if he wasn’t made worse by the "treatments" he may have received when he was institutionalized. Electroshock, ice water baths, insulin shock, lobotomy? Who knows if that couldn’t have affected his ability to do and know right from wrong, as they have shown many of these treatments made people worse. Most mental illness has no greater rate of violence than the general population.

Was it someone else? Was there abuse? Did they show signs at a young age? What was the "triggering" event, or was there none? Can a serial killer stop? Every time a crime like this is solved, we can learn something, and they may prevent future crime down the road.

All these people spending time on this case for all these years. If you count all the time up the amount of time spend on this case is astronomical.
Is it worth it?

A billion man hours spent chasing one’s tail? Probably not. Some people enjoy delusions of stumbling onto the killer’s name, but in reality the pursuit is little more than an exercise in circular dynamics. If, on the other hand, there were some non-vanishing chance that the killer could be identified by "web-sleuthing", then yes, it would be worth it. Ultimately though, other people have to decide if their lives are empty enough to fill it with chasing fifty year-old long-dead phantoms, a sentiment I am sure will generate at least a bit of ire.

Regardless, even if an eighty year-old suspect were caught today, holding Paul Stine’s wallet and the bloody knife used to stab Shepard and Hartnell, there would be more than a few who would claim the case unsolved, simply because the case itself is the focus, not its solution.

Will we ever know the true identity of the Zodiac?

Magic Eight Ball says "very doubtful".

And if we ever know (and he is still alive) can we get him in jail for all the wrongs he has done?

No.

What is your opinion?

I just gave it.

simply because the case itself is the focus, not its solution.

that’s a cop-out. the case has chewed over for forty years. we don’t have access to all of the info LE has, and even they don’t seem any closer to a resolution than the unwashed masses who are trying to figure this thing out. of course the case becomes the focus because the solution obviously isn’t in the information we have available to us. the idea that anyone other than the kooks (and there are many of those) want this to drag on is silly. the kooks exist any time fame or infamy is part of the bargain but they’re easy to ignore (especially on a messageboard where everyone posts with a consistent name).
