This one stood out to me. It was signed, ‘A Friend’, same was Z signed his letter. Also odd, seems like the writer is bringing attention to a woman’s missing Dog, but seems to not be the owner of the dog. We know that serial killers start off hurting animals sometimes, so i wonder if this could be a poke at the woman who lost her dog,if Z killed the dog. No way to know, and no way to ID the writer, just jumped out at me

So far in the VTH, I have spotted several ‘serial’ letter writers to the Editors, some Women included. I checked out the males, and did not see anything that raised red flags

This letter stands out, as it seems like something Z would write about sarcastically almost, but look how the writer signs off…. XYz. The X&Y are so large, as to draw attention to the Z.

@Morf: one wonders what happened to the cat of the kid who received those bamboo letters. Wonder if that cat "disappeared" one day….wouldn’t surprise me, but that’s just speculation. As for the letters…the one about the dog is interesting. I can see that angle, the one wherein Zodiac gets tired of the dog’s barking so he "disappears" it, then writes in to mock the dog’s death. Reminds me of his casual mention of shooting kids as they come bouncing off the bus, like he was stopped in traffic by a school bus, which made him angry, so he writes into the paper to vent. You know, because he’s an angry guy and such things annoy an angry, superior person such as himself. And he has no one to whom he can talk about these things so he writes his "friend" the editor.

If not, one also wonders if that’s where he got the "friend" and "citizen" thing, assuming he wrote those. Maybe he figured that was proper anonymous decorum.

Oh, and the dog article is interesting…why write anonymously for a missing pet? If that were me, I’d put my last name, at least.

A friend. Right. Like people see the editors of the paper as "friends". Or do they? You’d have to be pretty lonely to see the newspaper and its editor as your friend.

EDIT: the friend referred to an actual friend of the lady who lost the pet, not a friend of the editor. The individual writes again in a later edition and the tone is a great deal less suspect…

IMHO, that’s a big part of why he wrote. I see plenty of evidence in the letters to indicate that Z may have had a touch of reactive-attachment disorder.

There are a few prolific writers of letters to the editor in these 2 years, JOHN L. LEE, AUSTIN OMALLEY, ROBERT H. CLINTON to name a few. As a matter of fact, I think they continually wrote up until 1974 at least. I dont see any ties for any of them to Riverside in 66(Bates) or Santa Barbara in 63(Domingos/Edwards)
