The knife used to murder Cheri Jo was never found.

Okay, I misheard or misread that.

A hunting knife was FOUND, buried, with a rake but some people at police concluded it had no dry blood on it and was sort of a wrong ‘size’.

Didn’t zodiac say the tip of the knife broke off? Wonder if they were able to tell by the wounds if that was true or not

There was not a tip of a knife found in her body or near the crime scene. It was estimated to be one and a half inches wide and three and a half inches long. The bate knife I use when I fish is that size.

The one used was too large for a Jack knife, which was carried by some youths back then. (They folded up and could be kept in a pocket.)

Sandy: TY for the info re a jackknife being too small to have been used. Sounds like the knife used was deliberately chosen and not just an everyday portable. And it was chosen for the purpose of concealment as well as homicide.

The blade was too wide to have been your typical two bladed folding "pocket knife", but it could have been and probably was a folding "pocket knife". Having one thicker, wider blade has always been quite common too.

Thanks CC, I Googled vintage pocket knifes and found a couple that looked the right size, very creepy to look at the sort of knife that could have been used.

The knives I saw didn’t look flimsy enough to break a tip off, if he was telling the truth?

One was called a Boker magnum 111 vintage folding knife. That blade was 3.35 inches long and looked about 1 and 1/2 inches wide. It also had a clip to hook onto a belt for easy access.

I’ve wondered if it might have been a small skinning knife.

Not sure their exact blade size but these Barlows have always been a dime a dozen. I always figured it was something like it.

He just said "the knife broke", so I don’t know if he meant the blade broke off or something else. Since they didn’t find a broken blade I always figured what happened was the knife’s "spine’ snapped and the blade would just flop around back and forth, if you know what I mean, I’ve had that happen with those old pocketknives, they weren’t made for doing what he was doing.

Correction, it was the knife that broke and I assumed it was the tip of the blade, in Graysmiths yellow book it did say broken tip, blade one inch wide on page 319. On page 166 it is one and a half inches wide.

The one you are showing looks like the blade is about one inch wide.
Most don’t give the size of the blade , the only one I found that did, was the Boker magnum three.

One of the others I looked at, I figured the width would have to be a little less than half of the length and that one was a hunting knife. ( Many were made in China ) One and a half inches wide is pretty wide for a short blade.

The one used at Lake Berryessa was 1 inch wide 12 in long. The same exact size as the one found at one of the Trail side murders.

Swiss knife, similar..can break and Z made 4 cuts over the throat of CJB – one did not hit her throut but her face, partially. If it broke, Z took the blade afterwards. But he forgot the watch. Has it been two flashlights searching for stuff after the murder? If so, who else was there? That person must know more than he/she wants to, I guess (letter writer?). Silent.

What actually is strange that a hunting knife was found but ruled out. Not too many knifes lying around in that area, are there? Any DNA testing on it? Z could have wiped the blade shortly before throwing it away. The watch was his, that is for sure (10 ft.). Smudge on it = DNA = Genetic genealogy. Only weeks until Z will be identified, imo.

When my poi appeared in the costume (which was identical to what Sandy describes having been left in her car) and took the hood off (because it got too hot I guess), he pulled out a knife. It had been taped where the handle meets the blade and I think he said that was called the "hilt."

I just can’t remember what he said about it other than it had been broken and he’d taped it. He spoke at other times about a fish knife he’d been gifted by a friend of his mother’s whom he called his "Aunt Ann" (there was no blood relation, just a close friendship). I can’t remember if this boken knife was that one or not. As I can remember it, I thought it was more like a small butcher knife.

He also had several lengths of clothesline that had been cut in pieces that were approx. 12" min. long. I think they were white and he had them hanging around his waist in the back. Looked like a shirtail out.
