The most statistically likely possibilities would be "Hemmings" or "Hemnings", I think. But I agree that it looks like double "s" at the end there. Typically enough that particular word is blurrier than the following ones.

It is obviously 8 letters and does say "HEMMINGS" bad scan of bad typewriting aside.

Yep, glurk – that’s what it looked like to me initially. Fairly common surname. As is "Hemnings", be it said – but it does look more like double "m" than "mn".

So, is "Hemmings" + "park ranger" + "Yosemite" enough to go on to get a positive ID on this man? If it’s even worthwhile pursuing, that is. I said above that he was seemingly ruled out on fingerprints, but it doesn’t actually say so in the files – I think. His prints were requested – and park rangers would have their prints on file, it seems – so I suppose two and two should make four. But as far as I can see there is no document which positively states that his prints weren’t a match.

Then again, having spent hours now reading these FBI files the latter seems rare enough – there are plenty of documents in which writing samples are being compared to Z letters and dismissed, but I don’t see many examples (if any) of suspects being ruled out on fingerprints (as stated explicitly in the documents).

But the "what prints do they actually have – and are they Z’s?" question is for another thread, obviously.

I think there’s a good chance, he is one of these guys:

Every male Hemmings I can find listed in CA born between 1928 & 1948

Bruce R. Hemmings, born aprox 1931, got married in SF in 1977

David L. Hemmings, born aprox 1942, got married in Los Angeles in 1968

Peter L. Hemmings, born aprox 1944, got married in Contra Costa County in 1966

Nicholas S. Hemmings divorced in SF in 76

David Donald Hemmings born 12/29/47 in Los Angeles, died 2009, had some unknown criminal charge(s) in Riverside county

Robert Earl Hemmings born 6/18/37 died 1992

Raymond G. Hemmings born 11/21/33 in Los Angeles

Peter L. Hemmings born 9/1/43 in Alameda county

Mark B. Hemmings DOB 11/21/40 lived in the Davis, CA area

Bruce R. Hemmings DOB 2/4/31, lived in the Modesto area

William R. Hemmings DOB 6/23/47 lived in the Marysville CA area

Assuming that his name IS HEMMINGS, and that he 21-41 yrs old in 1969. This is a surprisingly small list. Norse, do you know what year the FBI memo is from?

A fidelity bond is something you need in order to work in certain occupations. I had to get one to be a notary public. It’s a form of insurance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fidelity_bond

I think what they were requesting was the application for that bond along with the employment agreement perhaps for hand writing comparison.

It would appear to be from 1969 – the particular memo where the name appears is dated 14th Nov ’69 unless I’m misreading it.

Might be worth checking out "HEMNINGS" (with an "N") too – just in case.

Re. Curry Co., that is a co. that operates Yosemite National Park. There is a camp Curry there; I visited that park in 1957. It is in northern California.

Charles D Hemmings
Riverside, CA | Age: 64

This guys previous addresses go back to 1972, and they are all addresses in Riverside or San Bernardino. By the way, we need to be cautious, we don’t know for sure that the Ranger’s 1st name is Charles, do we? I am sure his last name is Hemmings, there are ZERO people in CA records with last name of HEMNINGS

Also, this divorce in 76 in SF:
NAME: Nicholas S Hemmings
SPOUSE: Rowena S Wylie

A 1977 SF marriage:
