I would like to get in touch with family members of Darlene, I feel that she holds the secrets to the real sinister motive in this case. I have some questions that I would like to have for people that actually knew her back in the late 60s.

I understand her sister Pam is active on Z boards.

Has anybody spoken to a family member or old friend of Darlene’s? I would like the opportunity to speak to people that actually lived through this, and can offer information beyond what you read on a news article.

If anybody could point me in the right direction; that would be great.

There are people here that could assist you in that, but you should be careful how you approach these people and what you say to them. Sometimes, they don’t wish to be contacted

Darlene was one of my parents’ first friend when they arrived from San Francisco to live in Vallejo. My mother was a waitress at Terry’s Waffle shop where she befriended Darlene (Dee). My mother said Dee had a very upbeat personality and knew a lot of people in Vallejo. My mother worked the same shift as Dee, I believe it was nights and weekends. Terry’s Waffle Shop was a 24-hour coffee shop with a Captains Table for finer dining, banquet rooms, and a bar lounge. The restaurant frequent a lot of local police and Maritime Academy students. My mother felt that the detectives were more focused on tainting Darlene’s reputation than catching the suspect; insinuating she perhaps deserved her death. My mother said she wasn’t as bad as the media painted her out. My mother said the detectives already seemed to have a suspect in mind. She said, "it is as if they didn’t want to catch her killer." After Robert Greysmith’s book where her, my mother’s, name was mentioned A LOT; she became afraid again–paranoid and somewhat a recluse. While my mother passed away, my father is still alive and is reluctant to speak with reporters. The last reporter he spoke to was last summer from KGO where my father said "they didn’t want to catch the Zodiac."

If Graysmith published your mother’s name without her permission, that was a crummy thing to do. It’s like when he wrote "Kathleen Johns (not her real name)". Instead of coming up with an alias, just say that her real name was not really her’s. Why in the world would he do that?

I don’t think it’s that they didn’t want to catch Zodiac, they just got so centered on their own suspects. And with hundreds of people thinking they know the man police seek, it is no wonder Zodiac was not caught.

I do agree Darlene got portrayed badly, but I’d like to think we all can rise above all of that.

Did you mom (Janie) offer Graysmith her name?
