First post here, and I’ll apologize in advance if a topic such as this one already exists. I’ve spent a few days here reading the forums when this came to mind, and I hadn’t come across this subject specifically.

In light of the recent DNA investigation and now perhaps closer than any other time to revealing his identity, I can’t help but imagine that Z would end it before he let them lock him up. Obviously he’s up in years now (if even he’s still alive), but I just don’t see law enforcement getting the upper hand on him.

That said though, getting his name in the paper again (and his face) might just be one last hurrah for his ego and his unbridled need for attention — it’s been awhile. With not a lot of years left in his tank, one could suppose he could look at the situation as a win/win.

I don’t know… His ego might be too big thinking they’d never catch him. Probably depends on how confident he is that his DNA was not left behind… If he is alive. Killing himself would be the icing on the cake of his cowardice. I mean really… Sneaking up on people and shooting them, that certainly wasn’t bold.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Hi Jay Zen. My feeling is, if arrested …

  • that Z would relish his day in court, taking center stage again. [/*:m:3jo0dynn]
  • if all they’ve got is ye olde DNA as evidence, he’d believe he’s got a decent chance of beating the rap anyway.[/*:m:3jo0dynn]
  • he would keep his trap shut, so even if convicted only he would have the real certainty it was him or not – which he’d love.[/*:m:3jo0dynn]
  • and he could then do a "Caryl Chessman", and become a celebrity "wrongly-convicted" guy. [/*:m:3jo0dynn][/list:u:3jo0dynn]
  • So, come the worst, getting tons of press and attention is like a retirement plan for Z’s ego.

It’s a good question though, in light of that recent case where the guy who killed Arliss Perry blew his brains out when the cops came a’calling.

Well, the question would be: By knife, gun, rope or fire?

I actually thought of this – the how – if Z were to finally get nailed. Looking into GSK’s face as he was led through his arraignment made me wonder why he didn’t swallow a bottle or two of his prescription meds. I remember thinking he might have done so had he not been taken completely off gaurd.

Contrary to the GSK arrest, I highly doubt Z would be surprised when the law come a-knockin’ on his front door. No doubt he keeps his spectacles close and rifles through the papers again, only this time, knowing the coward he his and the age he would be today, the decision would have to be a struggle:

– live whatever time he has left as a free man, end it all when the doorbell rings
– let ’em cuff him and go out on top (as he sees it)

He’s always wanted people to know who he was without letting people know who he was. Given the scenario that he’s still out there and subject to finally being found out, I still find it impossible to read him.

I don’t see the arrogant b*****d taking his own life. He’ll think he can beat them even if they arrest him.

I think it’s all academic. I’m pretty sure he died a long time ago.

Agreed. I think the way he was so narcissistic and brazen about his actions… just comes off as a personality not predisposed to suicide.

How common is suicide amongs serial killer, I wonder?

Leonard Lake comes to mind off the top of my head, but if memory serves me correctly he was being questoned at the time and hadn’t yet been charged. More often than not it seems, most serial killers that committed suicide were already incarcerated; Fred West, Richard Trenton Chase, Israel Keyes, etc.

I did however, find a study from 2010 based on sample of nearly 600 cases that showed that 4.4% of known serial killers took their own lives. Not a high percentage obviously, and not surprising knowing the narcissistic cowards that the likes of Bundy, Gacy, and Dahmer etc., actually were.

When DNA results ultimately lead to Z’s identity and he is in fact dead (which I believe he probably is), hopefully we’ll be able to map out his life from beginning to end.
