morf13, Subject: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sat Mar 02, 2013 2:35 pm

I have seen many posts over the years at various sites discussing why Z may have been into CB radio and/or Ham radio.

Today,I bought this item-

This is from the 1970s in Vallejo. Its a postcard, and various CB buffs and clubs used to exchange postcards with their own artwork etc, with others who were like minded. The writing caught my eye along with the artwork, etc, it looked close enough to Z in my opinion to buy it. I am trying to find out who the artist was.

Zodiac normally made his number 2’s look like the letter Z, except for the Belli envelope which looks alot like these 2’s. Anybody have any thoughts as to what the various letters & numbers might mean? 3’s and 8’s EB 1&2

Did you fine Rick Marshall private collection lol ? I have a buddy that’s been into ham radio for many years and will see if he can figure out what they mean. Curious where did the seller get it ?

morf13, Subject: Re: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sat Mar 02, 2013 4:00 pm

The seller has a huge collection of these from all over the country

Ah did you ask where he got this piece and if he remembers from who ? I’m sure you probably already did. Anyhow sent it to my buddy and hopefully he will get back to me later tonight.

StitchMallone, Subject: Re: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sat Mar 02, 2013 6:46 pm

Haven’t heard back from my buddy yet but after some googling the 3’s and 8’s is cb and ham radio slang for love and kisses.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ph … ssage/8085

Back in the heyday of CB radio (Citizens Band), when you
finished talking with another CB’er, you might have have said 3’s and
8’s or 73’s and 88’s. In CB lingo, it means "LOVE AND KISSES". I
think ham radio operators still use it.

No problem and the EB from the sites I been looking at seems to stand for eyeball and meaning a one on one meeting.

morf13, Subject: Re: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sat Mar 02, 2013 7:27 pm

TRAV spotted some interesting things that may be Z like with this, but some things that may be different too

Shows longitude and latitude.

Look where they mailed it!

 :) Too bad it’s the 20’s.

…similar to the Pines card too…except that was Lincoln.

Cool find though Tahoe, and of course, there has to be a Riverside connection :D

StitchMallone, Subject: Re: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sun Mar 03, 2013 2:10 pm

Talk to my ham radio friend and he confirmed what I posted about the 3’s and the 8’s without me telling him what I found. He did say in all his years at amateur radio he never seen the EB before. I still believe it is a abbreviation for eyeball from what I found.

smithy, Subject: Re: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sun Mar 03, 2013 2:19 pm

Over here we used 33’s and 88’s (or 3’s and 8’s) to say "good luck to you" or words to that effect. Along with "Good numbers" – which meant the same thing. I always presumed they were something to do with channel switching – but in any case, they certainly were an affirmative.
Yes, EB for "eyeball", as in "You’ve just seen" or "You’re now seeing" sounds about right.
In this case, it seems like an invitation to meet the two of them, to me.

Ah me, the good old days, when we broadcast illegally on AM and things were more fun…..

An interesting poster Morf – good find.

tahoe27, Subject: Re: Zodiac, a CB Radio buff? Sun Mar 03, 2013 2:47 pm

Sometimes, a contact in person, between two ham radio operators, is humorously referred to as an "eyeball QSO".

That’s what I got from it a invitation to meet the both of them. Zodiac or not I’m just not sure I’d want to meet the both of them. They look like some twisted Ham radio swingers.

Forgot to mention as for the postcard looking like Zodiac writing. It reminds me a lot of the Red Phantom movie poster that they thought Rick Marshall drew. The Po box and zip code numbers look similar to Z’s and the abbreviation Calif looks pretty good and even better though if the F would have more of a hook on it. My bad the movie poster that the FBI thought Marshall wrote and then compared to the Red Phantom letter.

I think TRAV came to the exact same conclusion, or a similar one anyhow. I thought the same thing and the J in Vallejo stood out for me, and the CALIF & ZIPCODE looked alot like Z to me as well, overall, as soon as I saw it, it looked close enough to Z that I didnt want to lose it and bought it immediately

It’s a good find and we all came up with pretty much the same conclusion on our own

Here’s another one I bought from Vallejo-

And here are 3 more from Vallejo that I saw but did not buy-

Wow and the KFC 291 with the trailer looks a little like Zodiac’s bus bomb diagram. Glad you got these Morf and thanks for posting them for us to see.

CB Radios were big with travelers & truckers.

Couple more of these postcards:

Pretty neat and the Zodiac one would be more interesting if it didn’t have a Georgia address.

Lol there was those Zodiac like lovers lane murders in Georgia in the early 70’s. Happen to be a black male and maybe they had the right description of Zodiac at the Stine seen all along lol.

Cool glad you did. Sadly like Zodiac he was never caught either and went doormat after a few killings., if I remember correctly. The Monster of Florence is also interesting when it comes to lover lane killings but I don’t think it is related to Zodiac either. Lol I’m out of here tonight lack of sleep lol. You mean the Georgia postcard Zodiac you checked out.

I have seen many posts over the years at various sites discussing why Z may have been into CB radio and/or Ham radio.

The idea that Z might have beeen either a CB radio aficionado, or may have used a radio scanner is intriguing. Although I am not aware of any real evidence to support the thought, it almost seems surprising to think that he would not have taken advantage the ability to surreptiiciously listen in on active investigations. The radio thing would be kind like a magic missing ingredient.

As I said, interesting to speculate on, though I don’t think there is any actual evidence.

That said, the total lack of supporting evidence didn’t stop me from waking up at 4 am the other day after, a wild evening of dining on Z’s famous brownies with the magic missing ingredient, wondering if it is possible to use a taxi radio to cut into police channels and fake a police call. Does anybody know if this is within the reasonable realm of possibility?

The reason the thought–factless fantasy though it may be–caught my attention is that it might account for two oddities of the Paul Stine murder: reports of Stine gettting in the front seat, and his incredible luck that the suspect was reported to have been a black male adult. That kind of luck never happens to me when I am trying to make my getaways, so maybe Z made his own luck.

Anyway, I thought it was a cool thought, even if it is just the product of the brownies. :)

Thanks,

G

I agree about no proof of Zodiac being a ham radio operator and think that was more or less speculation on LE. Imo I think it was likely that he was but again that is me just speculating. As for the ham radio if I remember correctly that is how Marshall became a suspect in the first place. His Ham radio buddy turned him in for saying he found something better then sex.

Still looking for the maker/origin of this postcard…
In the meantime, I see alot of Vallejo people were into their Cbs-

Foreigner, the Navy Yard organization has only been using that Po Box for the last 5 years or so. The lady there told me that they were not using it back in the 1970s. I am going to call the post office and see if there is a way to find out who was using it back then, but they probably will not tell me. I am interested in the card specifically due to the writing along the bottom which looks pretty similar to Zodiac’s

Morf–

ARe their radio call numbers (or whatever you call them) on that card?

Here are some FCC registered licenses in Vallejo. I quickly glanced…saw some from the 80’s.

No, no call#’s, only little numbers that represent abbreviations of words like hugs & kisses, etc I have seen a few Vallejo cards with call numbers, but of course, this one does not have them :x

Thanks for that link, I wish it went back to the 60’s

I noticed in that link I gave there is a ham radio club in Vallejo (one in Benicia too). Bet there are some older folks in some of those clubs who might know something. You could write them a letter…maybe….?

I’d be interested in Bencia. I’m curios if any Zodiac suspects was Ham operators besides the known one Marshall.

There was a guy named Joe Mahar in Darlene’s address book. He was from Albany NY. Back in the 1950’s, he had been stationed in the Bay Area in the navy. He was arrested for armed robbery one night in a Bay Area bar when he was stationed there. Years later, when he was older, he moved to Illinois. While in Illinois, he held a license for Ham radio

Tried to ask Vallejo post office straight up if they could look up who had the po box back in the late 60’s or into the 70’s,but they told me they have only been computerized for 10 years or so,and before that, all records were handwritten, and they no longer have them.

Tahoe,I took your advice, and I am attempting to contact about 5-6 of the people on that list of registered radio people in Vallejo, maybe they can shed some light

Just bringing this back up again as I am/have been interested in Z being a Ham operator. So, Cat Ballou….do these names stick with the operator over time and can there me more than 1? I ask because I found a news paper article from Kerrville, TX from 1976 that mentions a local meetup of lady CBers and it mentions Cat Ballou being one of them.

Lady CBers got together Wednesday night at the Pizza Hut. Those present were: Mountain Laurel, Flaming Star, Mammy Yokum, Gremlin Chaser, Cat Ballou, Lady Cherokee, Kitty Litter, Rhubard, Red Wing, Dimples, Queenie, Grass Burr, Shady jLady, Pat Seeds, Brown Byes, ‘Apple Dumplin, Mama Wood

Not sure whether CBers had unwritten rules as to the use of handles. My uncle was a ham radio buff in the pre-Internet days. I remember him talking to "Red Baron" and "Jesse James" and so forth, in other words very common names which I imagine would’ve been used by multiple individuals.

My guess (for what it’s worth) is that Cat Ballou would’ve been a fairly popular handle among female enthusiasts – it’s practically in the "Calamity Jane" bracket.

Does anyone else see the face of a wolf in the Masked Man’s hat? Not that it’s important, but kinda cool to look at.

I wonder if the guy liked to travel and maybe was in Vallejo and a certain someone happened to like his CB handle. He’s a musician, so it’s possible he could have toured back then.
