Missed this thread over the Holidays, very interesting. Worth exploring for sure. I can help background check these names

Thanks, morf. I’m hoping a lot of people on the site will jump in with some research once all the names are compiled. Not really sure how many there will be but definitely less than 84K. At the rate the scraping is going, it will be another 10-16 weeks before my computer writes "Finished". There are about 7.5 million more biographical records to download at a rate of ~1/sec.

Yikes! That’ll take about 87 days!

One way to improve your rates is to collect a large list of web proxies and then use them to distribute the requests.

Thanks, doranchak. I’ll look into this. This is my first scrape job. Don’t wanna get banned from ancestry.com if I screw it up!

It’s slow going. I’ve processed 47K names so far. Only 175K more to go.

Just an update to let everyone know my computer is still chugging away on the dataset of people who lived in Napa and Solano Counties from 1967-1972. ~122K names have been processed with ~100K more to go. When completed there will be over 10M data points associated with these names (addresses, dates of birth, etc.).

ETA: sometime in early June.

Interesting direction.

Now if you can just find a fat four-eyed guy who lived within walking distance of that first telephone booth….

I didn’t mean anything by it. It’s just harmless, fun sarcasm. You guys have no sense of humor.

At the time I didn’t think you did. I’m not so sure about that now. I have a pretty good sense of humor but where I draw the line is when that humor cuts too close to the work a person is doing and/or the seriousness of that work. Regardless of what opinion you may have on a given subject you should still show a little respect.

I think I just don’t like your attitude.

Thanks for the defense, Soze. The data may not reveal anything, but I think we’ll be able to quickly narrow down a list of suspects who are the right age and lived in the right area (e.g. in Ken Rossmo’s jeopardy surface). There’s occupational data as well, including profession and employer plus lots of other random stuff. The major hiccup is that there doesn’t appear to be a source of physical data (height, weight, medical history including any visual impairment, etc.). If only we could get copies of the driver licenses!!!!

not to add more to what’s already a big project, but would there be access to later DL data? Height and eye color would still be good.

I think it is actually a very intelligent idea to take known data at the time and try and isolate suspects from it.

However, I think the one could extract from the late 1960 might not be a complete as one would hope.

Also as mentioned by another the data could perhaps start with a pool of Vallejo Males to isolate good candidates for poi, but Vallejo also had many individuals commuting to work there (Mare Island Navel Base) from other locals such as Napa and Sonoma.

It is a good idea if the data still exists and can be extracted from public data sources.

I suspect that the Navy / Government might have additional data for all male employees (government) employed by Mare Island. Additionally, The Navy / Government should have data on all male military using or stationed on the navel base. I know there was a commissary there so multiple benches of the military did have access to the base and were required to provide id and or sign in when making purchase.

I think the area in question is a very good start and I am really excited to see what you produce but I don’t think it should be all inclusive. I am quite partial to Sonoma given the highways he would have had to have traveled and (I’m sorry Seagull) its proximity to the Santa Rosa murders. Not at all saying that the Zodiac was involved in that. I really don’t know that he was but I do keep it in mind. Anyway, once you produce this information, I’m sure you will have people here to help you wade through the information. I am one.

The data is being stored in a sqlite database which I’ll make available to everyone right away. I’m contemplating creating a website (zkbase.com) so that non-technical people can sift through the data, add notes, etc. I’ve never built a website, so I’m going to have to think about that one before jumping in. In any event, I’ll try to supply the data in whatever format is the most useful for people.
