As per Dr. Rossmo (this I transcribed from the video, which I own a copy of), so you don’t have to break your back looking for the video online. My comments in square brackets.

"When I entered the results [he means the data pertaining to where the attacks happened] into the Rigel software system [the software that geographical profilers use to determine an offender’s location] and ran the analysis, the focus was on a certain area of Vallejo, probably, I would say, the peak area was the north-west part of Vallejo, Rancho Vallejo, also including Mare Island, the naval shipyard there. It curves around and there’s also the possibility of some locations in the Benecia area.

Must be using a different program than me. I used Google:

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_did_the … iller_live

Where did the Zodiac killer live?
In: Notorious Murderers and Serial Killers, Orcas (killer whales), Zodiac Killer

Answer:
No one has ever been arrested or tried and convicted in this case. So it is unknown who the Zodiac Killer is or was and so it is unknown where the Zodiac lived.
Results

Since apparently the Zodiac Killer Whale is an Orca, did anyone check Sea World?

Hmm… the report seems to have vanished from the interwebs

I contacted Dr. Rossmo asking where the report can be read and here’s his response:

I am sorry, but you would have to ask Paramount for access as they paid for the work (and I am afraid I have no idea who to contact there). The only exception I have is for law enforcement personnel with an investigative interest.
Cheers.

If anyone wants to try to chase down the report via Paramount, here’s the citation: Rossmo, D. K., & Pagaling-Hagan, S. (2008, February). The Zodiac Killer Case: Historic profiling of an unsolved
serial murder mystery. Paper presented at the meeting of the Western Society of Criminology, Sacramento, CA. http://www.cj.txstate.edu/people/faculty/rossmo/contentParagraph/01/document/CJ-cv-Rossmo-Kim.pdf

Also found the old Zodiac movie site on the waybackmachine, which may not be directly related to the geographic profiling subject, but is interesting nonetheless and people may want to take a look.

I heard back from Rossmo today too. He gave me some of the same info and says he has not done any further work on Zodiac since the documentary. He says he has done work on Jack The Ripper, and other cases however. I invited him to the forum to expand on his profiling and to possibly answer questions, but he respectfully declined the invite as he is quite busy.

I have that DVD someplace. Is it legal to upload it to Youtube? Anybody know?

YAY, here’s the Rossmo video:
http://www.zodiacmovie.com /”> http://web.archive.org/web/200901141939 … movie.com/

Click on ‘geographic profiling’. They even allow you to download the video!

Rossmo states, that if Zodiac was active today, "it would not be too difficult to find this person"

Also of interest, are the other videos for ‘linguistic analysis’ (they look at ALA’s writing habits…word breaks etc, would be very intgeresting when looking at other suspects like manalli with odd habits in writing),and view the ‘behavioral profiling’ as well.

cool! I was too busy today to look at the various dates/cached versions of the site on the waybackmachine, but I figured if the Geo Profiling section was there, you’d find it!

I viewed the Dr. Rossmo clip, thank you. I noticed one of the hot spots actually loops over the Carquinez Bridge into Contra Costa County, hovering over
Crockett, Rodeo and Port Costa. In order for Zodiac to mail all those letters in San Francisco, if he lived in Vallejo,he would have to pay two tolls each
time to drive into the SF City, let alone all the gas money. Just a thought. I also wonder if Dr. Rossmo included the pay phone call locations and the mailed
letters location on his map. Once over the Carquinez Bridge from Vallejo, you are in Contra Costa County, and closer to SF. At least Dr. Rossmo really narrows
it down. By the way, I lived in this area for over twenty five years and am very familiar with it.

Great to have that resource back. I thought about checking the Wayback machine but I didn’t think the content would be there. Nice work… His analysis would make a good separate thread, IMO.

OWK, I totally agree. I think it’s important to consider EVERY known appearance of Zodiac. How would the geographical profile change, for instance, if his presence could be confirmed in Riverside or if CJB was a known victim? I would have to think that would radically change the geographical profile.

I’ve mentioned the geographical profiling of BTK that determined that he was residing in a small area of East Wichita where most of the known murders occurred. I would be really interested to know how Rossmo’s profiling would handle all of BTK’s eventual known victims and how the two unknown victims closer to home would change the profile. How would adding in the communication drop sites change the profile?

doranchak, maybe he’s bored and would care to join us? :)

Great to watch those again. I agree morf about the linguistic stuff, very interesting. In a way I’m glad that analysis found something in Allen’s writing that was of note because I’ve always kinda balked at statements that said Allen’s writing looked nothing like Zodiac’s. I always thought, well it doesn’t look that different, in fact I would classify it as worth a look if it wasn’t for the other factors ruling him out.

It’s nice to have some clarifying explanations on things like the spellings. I would be in agreement with what was said in that regard. Makes sense. I assume though that it might get tricky when it comes to tying these things to POI’s. These elements/devices/approaches are subterfuge and intended to avoid such connections being made. So if we find a POI with these traits in their writing what does that tell us? Surely we shouldn’t be finding them. Why bother employing them if you are going to use them in your everyday writing?

I think it becomes more viable in the context of the Allen example. Zodiac or not, these traits showed up, not in his everyday writing but in his weaker hand examples. When it comes to other POI’s I suppose we should look for writing examples that are different from the bulk of their normal writing. A short note etc etc but then that becomes muddied when say, for example, we only have a short note and nothing else to compare it to. Manalli we’re lucky with because we have a lot of stuff. IIRC morf you asked me about those word splits in Manalli’s writing and you were under the impression that he used them a lot. When I had a look though I think there were only 2 or 3 examples in all of his writing and I’m not sure they were in words pointed out in the linguistic video. I once thought that was probably a discouraging thing but in the context of what I would now expect considering subterfuge that is perhaps actually a positive thing.

I’m not so hot on the Behavioural video. I think this disguising pattern runs through all of his communications and as such I don’t think the content of the Citizen letter indicates anything about his character, changing or otherwise. The other letters sent around the same time that I believe are from him put the citizen letter in context for me. Even if you don’t count those the Exorcist letter still does that. It was sent only 4 months earlier and contains a threat. Suddenly a harmless citizen? Nah, not buying it.

Can’t really say much about the Geo-profiling because I don’t really know much about that area of analysis but I’m looking forward to other’s discussions on it continuing.

The guy that does the linguistic profiling, is Dr. Gerald McMenamin. He has agreed to have a look at the 50 something pages of Manalli’s stuff from the old forum to see what he finds. The bad news is, he said he is busy, and it may take a while to do it. I am interested in what he finds. I tried to condense it down to some obvious stuff which seems easy to spot, at my blog www.zodiackillersite.blogspot.com
