While reading some of Zodiac’s comments, it is unavoidable to notice that on many occasions he constructs sentences in an odd, rather unconventional way which almost end up not making sense. I’ll list some examples below to show what I mean.

Nov 9 letter: "I have grown rather angry with the police for their telling lies about me. So I shall change the way the collecting of slaves."

We might expect the writer to have said "So I shall change the way I collect my slaves" or something similar. Again, is this Z’s showing poor language/English skills, or is it deliberate and for a reason? Hard to tell.

Oct 13 Letter: "This is the Zodiac speaking. I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington St + Maple St last night, to prove this here is a blood stained piece of his shirt. I am the same man who did in the people in the north bay area."

Again, the wording is odd here. "I am the same man who did in the people in the north bay area." Considering that, in previous communications, he’s directly named Lake Herman as opposed to ‘North Bay Area’ and specifically acknowledged that the victims were "2 teenagers", this again sounds not only odd, but so vague that it’s almost as if the writer of this letter does not know the actual location of the December crime nor the age range of the victims. He can only offer in this letter that it was somewhere in the North Bay Area, and that some ‘people’ were killed.

July 31, Letter’s to both Examiner & Herald: "Here is a cyipher (sic) or that is part of one"

Why word it like that? If he were consistent in his odd way of saying something then fine, but in the third letter that he sends accompanying these other two, the third’s destination being the Chronicle, he states "Here is part of a cipher, the other 2 parts of this cipher are being mailed to the editors of the Vallejo Times + SF Examiner."

Also, to elaborate slightly on his inconsistency, in the letter addressed to the Chronicle Zodiac declares he’s "The murderer of the two teenagers." To the Exam. & Herald Zodiac now declares himself "The Killer of the 2 teenagers."

I’m sure people can point on many more examples of Zodiac using odd words and phrases, and doing so inconsistently, but why? Is it really him writing all these letters? The handwriting suggests so. But if he’s using some sort of tracing device to copy the printing from another source, then it doesn’t have to be one man doing it?

"So it’s sorta social. Demented and sad, but social, right?" Judd Nelson.

I think Zodiac was majorly influenced by the Jack the Ripper letters and was attempting to recreate, as closely as possible, their grand and erudite tone. To that end, he employed questionable phrasing and word choices that, to my eye, reflect a poorly-educated American man’s attempt to emulate the language of English pulp villains like the mass-media version of JTR or Professor Moriarty.

I agree. Zodiac by definition is a hokey cartoon character, complete with ciphers to solve, costumes, and greeting cards.
