Just curious, have you guys discussed or examined any of the local Bay area cipher puzzles that ran in the Bay area around the time of the Z crimes to see if they offer any clues, or influences for Zodiac? Also, have any of you looked into the possibility that Z may have written letters to local cipher/code clubs using his real name, or maybe was a Member of one?

I remember seeing a message thread on this exact subject a while ago. I think someone local to the Bay Area even went to one of the local libraries and got copies of the microfilms for the local newspapers with cryptograms that were published a number of weeks prior to the time Z408 was sent. I don’t think any conclusions were made. I can’t remember where I saw this thread, but google should be able to unearth it.

“Every animal is providentially directed to the use of its proper weapon”

That one is certainly strange and interesting…

It is. A bit less so in context but still interesting. It’s a John Ray quote apparently.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

Seems to be an old quote from 1670 or so by John Ray. The solution to the first image by morf is:
"EDUCATION IS A CAPITAL TO THE POOR MAN AND AN INTEREST TO THE RICH MAN – HORACE MANN"

EDIT: I seem to have posted almost at the same time as Trav, but I solved a cipher in the meanwhile, so it took me a bit longer. :D

With that said, the very name of the newspaper part above is "Daily Cryptoquote." Daily, it says. These ran every day, and in some papers, puzzles like these still do. Trying to look at these is almost like trying to look at every single crossword puzzle ever published, just pointless, really.

Just seems a waste of time, IMO.
