Nicely done, Dave! I also liked Klaus Schmeh’s Lego-based re-enactments.

Yes, great presentation Dave. And Klaus Schmeh’s as well. If there are other videos, I’d love to see them as well.

My hope is that LE will realize that there are actually good, serious codebreakers out there who can help with these unsolved codes, and perhaps some things will get released. To me it’s like open-source programs. The more eyes out there to see it, the more likely it is that some of them will see something that no one else has noticed.

(Regarding the other entries on the FBI’s top 10 unsolved codes list): "All of our top 10 unsolved codes are either active FBI investigations or cases not owned by the FBI so we don’t have dissemination authority."

Makes me mad a bit. On some level I do understand that they want to be cautious about releasing something potentially dangerous. But if FBI couldn’t crack it, what are the chances that someone else would? And if they do, surely that’ll be a guarantee that they’ll have enough intelligence not to do something stupid, and report their findings directly to FBI, in case it is something dangerous indeed. Although I can’t imaging how something encoded in a short cipher can be in any way dangerous for the general public. You can find all sorts of things on the Internet these days, for example, The Anarchist Cookbook, etc., and the society hasn’t gone to hell yet. Well, mostly. 🙂 Makes me think that FBI just doesn’t want the embarrassment of someone else solving a cipher that they couldn’t. That’s the part that makes me especially mad, that the FBI’s pride might be getting in the way of solving a case. I hope I’m wrong…

REALLY good. You are very well spoken.

I also liked the FBI’s contribution to the discussion at the end.

Thank you for highlighting more matching symbols (@12:15). I looked at that thing a thousand times and even asked others to help–and here you show some more! Your professional take is appreciated. Now I need to go change my original (completely amateur) effort…again.. :)

Also, a nice touch at the end when you show the ad for the Monarch paper at Woolworths. Not so rare when you consider that.

Thank you all for the nice feedback! The talk would not have been possible without everyone’s contributions. Many people here and on other forums have come up with interesting facts and observations about the ciphers. My goal is to help keep track of them all so researchers can be armed with as much info as possible when they try to attack the 340.

Yeah, I wish they would publish more unsolved codes for the world to work on. They tried to "crowd-source" for a solution to the Ricky McCormick codes but I can’t think of any others. I wonder why they decided to do that for that case and not for any others.

Or, you can just apply for the job and get all the access you want: https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/lab/fbi-la … ions#job15 :)

Yes indeed excellent presentation. Maybe it will spur some more experts to get interested and take a look. Very well done. Glad you gave a mention to the QWERTY typewriter key matches to the 408, I think that is worth some further consideration.

Doranchak: "I learned about this paper which reveals Ted Kaczynski’s cipher system: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1 … ode=ucry20 I really want to get a hold of that paper since I’ve been trying to get a copy of Kaczynski’s cipher-related material from his journals for some time. I met the author at the conference and asked her to email me a copy of the paper – hopefully she will follow through. She was with the FBI gang that showed up for the Crimes and Ciphers panel that Dan Olson, Klaus Schmeh and I spoke in. "

AK Wilks: Glad to see she did follow through. And thank you for sending it to me. As it is a government created document, there is no copyright on it, as the study itself notes. I posted screen captures of the FBI CRRU Kaczynski Unabomber Codes study here: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=2800

You mentioned George Lasry at the conference. Here is the code he solved. Very good job. Too bad he insists (so far anyway) on knowing the Zodiac 340 encryption scheme before taking a run at trying to get a solution.

Also members here were asking what the FBI did on the 340. We have some of the documents showing the very first work they did on the 340 here:

Thanks, but I’m already spending too much time on these. Plus, right now I have an interesting job *and* an interesting hobby. If I go work for FBI, I’d have just an interesting job, so I’d have to find a new hobby. 🙂
