I’ve composed a letter to the Riverside (CA) Chief of Police re the Bates case. In it, I give him my POI’s name, and relevant info. Further, I’ve bent over backwards to be conciliatory. What do you guys think? In light of "Bob Barnett" being excluded via his mitochondrial DNA test, do you think the Chief might be receptive? And, should he refuse, might this not add weight to the argument that RPD is stubborn and obstructionist?

my 2 cents

I would try the Riverside co sheriff dept. I have contacted Riverside Police and a Det. Jim seemed interested in what I had to say but that was the last contact .
The cheif deals with more managerial duties than investigating leads

Worth a shot, can’t hurt. Maybe a fresh Detective will take the blinders off.

You will probably get a nice reply and that will be the end of that. But, you never know…and it never hurts. Just don’t be surprised if they get the info they want from you, then don’t contact you again. I doubt very much they will talk to you about the details of the case. Good luck!

Tell them "I’m the one who did it". They’d come ‘chat’ with you then. Might not be a nice chat though.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

Sure, just don’t say anything about "Zodiac." If they ask, say "Zodi who? Never heard of him!"

Yes. Diverge it a little and say your POI is Dr. Acula or Zoe Diach. That kind of thing. Ahhh we jest, it’s just our little release.

The serious advice that other members have given sounds good to me. Who knows what it may bring but even if they do just take the info and run, at least they have it. I can’t blame them for being sceptical though. Even though I’m part of this community, I’m not sure how solid any of our speculations are. Then again, that’s why some members send stuff to LE, to see what they think. Always good to check with many on any info that we think might be important. Kinda why we’re here and not all flying solo.

Good Point, don’t bring up Zodiac, just mention your suspect who lives or lived in the SF Bay area, of course, they will want to know why you suspect him.

Thanks, all, for the advice! Think I’ll ramp it up a little, and contact the Riverside DA.

Don’t hand over any evidence you may have as you’d never get it back, imo based on what I’ve read. Make copies and take pictures of anything and give them copies and keep the originals if at all possible.

Can someone tell me what to do with any handwriting samples I’d like compared by an expert as has been done here? I am desperately trying to completely eliminate my poi from suspicion in my mind. I’d like to be able to send a sample to someone and ask their opinion about it. TYI.

I know I read somewhere that someone would examine for a fee but wonder if that person is still actively doing that. Last night I reviewed the handwriting thread but was so tired, I wasn’t sure whose opinion it was or how to contact that person. TIA.

I think anyone who tries in anyway to bring the families closure in this case in general, or specifically CJB in this instance, get’s my admiration. However, I think that if you do get a response from Riverside PD, it will only likely be to say thank you for the tip or interest, we’ll look into it, goodbye.

The thing is about this case is that when someone does discover a potentially vital bit of info or evidence, nobody in an official position cares. Nor do the press, the tabloids don’t want to know and wont print anything about Zodiac, unless it’s some nut job standing in front of a Sn Francisco Landmark telling the media that she is the illegitimate offspring of the 35th President of the United States, or more commonly known as… JFK. Not only did she get put up for adoption by Mr Kennedy, but found an adoptive family, of which her adoptive Father turned out to be the San Francisco Zodiac. Talk about bad luck! First your air to a fortune you cannot legally claim, and as compensation for this, you adoptive father is a serial killing nut case.

I hope they do reply and it’s positive, but I wouldn’t hold your breath. To LE Agencies in CA, the word ‘ZODIAC’ is like a crucifix to a vampire, and they don’t want to go anywhere near it. I get the impression he (Z) is the proverbial thorn in their sides and made them look like buffoon’s more than they care to remember as it is. Stick Zodiac on a shelf labelled ‘Cold Case Files – Inactive’ and let him and the victims fade into obscurity and only go public with a ‘new development’ in the case when it’s from a fantasist like Perez.

"So it’s sorta social. Demented and sad, but social, right?" Judd Nelson.

Then I must thank my lucky stars. I have had quite a few conversations with law enforcement with regards to Zodiac and have never been made to feel as though my thoughts on the subject were not important or that the mere mention of zodiac was a "proverbial thorn in their side". It was quite obvious in those conversations that they did CARE about the case and the victims are their #1 priority.
