While that article may have appeared in a Eureka newspaper, it looks like the incidents happened in Orinda in Contra Costa County. Contra Costa County is adjacent to Alameda County and to the North. Mt.Diablo is in Contra Costa County.

Almost got his butt shot! Probably shouldn’t scare folks like that. :)

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Orinda, CA 94563

Zynchronicity perhaps? But there is an area in Orinda known as the Orinda Crossroads.

Zynchronicity:
And a killing at the Casa Orinda Restaurant, at the Crossroads still unsolved. (Where the ranchers brand the restaurants tables: Besides food, the charm of the Casa comes from its unique decor. When a decision was made to do away with the linens on the table, the family asked all the ranchers in the area to come with their brands and “brand” the tables. You can still see these markings today.)

Tragedy struck in 1965 when Tommy Snow, the day-to-day manager of the restaurant, was found murdered in his car on a back road between Orinda and his Pleasant Hill home. His killer was never found, and Jack Snow never seemed to have the same passion for the business after his brother’s death.

Zynchronicity:
Article says he could have been playing a Dangerous Game: People say that Tommy Snow might have been playing a dangerous game when in 1965 he was found murdered in his car. His killer has never been found.

Speculation Only:
The old time Orinda Theater sits on the long ago Orinda Crossroads.

The ultimate spectacle, of course, awaits you in the theatre. As you enter the spacious auditorium, Heinsbergen’s lavish murals of The Four Elements of Man greet you. They are an eclectic combination of references to classical mythology and modern technology. Fruits and flowers represent Earth, an Aqua God depicts Water, wings and a stylistic airplane portray Air and workers forging steel symbolize Water.

Thanks Zamantha for the information about Tommy Snow and the Orinda teens.

I was related by marriage to the Jack Snow family.

Contra Costa County had at least one person doing Zodiac like things in the late 80’s early 90’s.
The man drove at night on back country roads, following lone women drivers, honking and flashing his lights to get them to pull over. (It reminded me of K John’s.)

Oakland hills lovers lanes in the 70’s ,had a man who would scare young couples.( I forgot all of the details)

One can’t forget that letter Morf, nor your excellent research in tracking it down. One reason I always ponder Orinda & it’s Crossroad.
Here’s a great report written by Ricardo of MKZodiac on the subject of that letter.

Unfortunately , I can’t find a city directory for Orinda/ Moraga . The man who wrote the letter could have been Adams neighbor ?
I do believe that Zodiac has a serious mental problem and Adams could have been his Doctor, if so ,I would think that Zodiac took a heck of a chance naming his Doctor that could be traced back to him ?
The date is also one day and one yr from the Stine shooting and I think it was A.Crowley’s birthday ?

Zodiac apparently did not kill everyone he threatened , I wonder why ? Could it be that he enjoyed toying with some of them who knew that they were targeted by him ?

My RH suspect was living in Berkeley and worked at UC Berkeley in 1970.

Ricardo’s report about the Adams letter is just one of his many fine reports !
Thank you Zamantha for giving the link.

I had mentioned earlier that I was related to the Snow family, but before I married into the family. Tommy’s daughters were my dear friends, two went to my high school while my close friends the twins went to Acalanes high. Tommy was not only the manager, he was half-owner when he was shot twice in the head with a 38.

His death has been recently posted about on Zodoackiller.com, in reference to a letter about Zodiac shooting a man in a parked car with a 38. Tommy Snow was shot in the head with a 38. A Z letter was sent to Dr.Edward C Adams who lived in Orinda. Cosette Ellison was kidnapped from Moraga which is next to the Orinda/ Lafayette area.
(About 4 miles from Moraga)
Could Zodiac have lived in that area at one time?

Tommy’s daughter has been to my home twice in the past two weeks after I located her. She did not know that we were posting about her father’s murder. She didn’t know that the gun used to kill him was not his 38 according to ballistics. Tommy always kept his 38 next to him, probably because he carried a lot of money on him? He still had $500.00 in his wallet when he was shot, so the motive was not robbery. His daughter believes Tommy was forced to drive to the location where he was shot. The family lived in Walnut Creek, that would not be the way to Walnut Creek. We had lunch at my home a couple of days ago and I asked her to bring her 1954 Acalanes yearbook. I have been looking through it and found they had the play, "Mikado"! Was this perhaps the first time Zodiac saw it? I am looking at every name in that book to see if there are any suspect names or anyone who looked like a young Zodiac? I found three of my boyfriends there! ( Nice to see them the way I remembered them )

Sandy, FWIW IMO the "Mikado" along with Gilbert and Sullivan were very popular back then.

I remember seeing a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan at the Philharmonic Auditorium and/or Biltmore Theatre in the 1950’s/60’s. I took piano lessons for a couple of years and think there were a couple of compositions in one of the Thompson music books. My high school had a drama club and I was a member (costume committee). The club produced a musical every year and did the "Mikado" in 1960 or 61 IIRC.

My poi (boyfriend whom I met in 1970) was a good pianist who’d studied classical piano. His mother had a master’s degree in speech and drama (very unusual for a woman of her age back in the day). When he took me to their family home the first time, I clearly remember discussing these and how fond we were of G & S. His mom turned on her theatrical voice and began quoting something about "merry maids/school girls" (may be from Pirates of Penzance) and then ended by very dramatically announcing "I Am the Lord High Executioner" from the Mikado!
