I couldn’t find this Zodiac-related episode of the series "Great Crimes and Trials" anywhere so I posted a copy here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLkwDKuriuc

It originally aired in 1995 on the BBC.

10 minutes 55 seconds "But any doubts about the killer’s identity were dispelled the next day when a letter from Zodiac arrived at the San Francisco Chronicle. With it was a bloodstained piece of the driver’s shirt and a bullet from the same pistol that had killed Jensen and Faraday."

Did you know a bullet was missing from the DOJ Report and this can be deduced from the image below. Should be 5 bullets from Jensen. Should be 8 in total. Where did the missing bullet go? 8-)

From police report

Should read 2 in car, 5 in back of female victim, 1 in male victim, 3 unaccounted for. Because one of the bullets from Jensen has disappeared.

Wow, that is quite a statement about the sending of the Lake Herman Road bullet! I don’t believe they made it up but has this information been publicly released elsewhere? I wonder if Zodiac also left something from another crime at the Lake Berryessa crime scene.

Many mistakes have been made in documentaries, but rarely is something like this pulled out of thin air. Chief Martin Lee in his November TV appearance stated that they had evidence they were holding back, because they didn’t want to jeopardize any future trial.

"I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington St + Maple St last night, to prove this here is a blood stained piece of his shirt. I am the same man who did in the people in the north bay area". And here is the bullet to prove it

I don’t know, but the autopsy report says there were three exit wounds. One was most likely the bullet found in the panties, the other two would have went off into the wild blue yonder?

The only problem with that is, the report also says there was only one hole in front of the dress. Two would have had to exit the same hole, which is virtually impossible. My guess is that other bullet exited around the v neck line of the front of the dress.

I’m guessing Zodiac didn’t go digging around inside anyone to get a bullet. I’d say he sent one just like the ones used. He might have fired the gun into the ground, then dug out the bullet to mail.

Thank you doranchak!

Which letter is this? Does anyone have a close-up?

Also – they do call Gene Harden "Dale" … so I am taking in the info with a grain of salt. :D

There were three exit wounds: one bullet was found in the panties, one was found on the ground near Jensen’s body (as stated in the DOJ report). That still leaves one unaccounted for. The three exit wounds were in vastly different positions, so two bullets couldn’t have exited the same hole, as you stated. This still leaves one missing bullet, [1] Exited her body and found in panties [2] one exited her body and found on the ground near her body [3] unknown. It may never have been recovered by anybody, or Zodiac picked it off the ground. These are the only options. The spent casing on the Rambler floorboard also went missing, because only 9 casings were submitted to the DOJ, despite 10 casings being detailed at the crime scene. The missing bullet and the statement in the video doesn’t sound that strange when you consider one of the bullets that exited Betty Lou Jensen is unaccounted for.

[1] one exit wound "is over the posterior iliac crest penetrates the deep muscles and exits to the right of the umbilicus". This is the bullet recovered from the panties.
[2] one exit wound "is over the left interior chest laterally and left margin of the breast, in the 4th intercostal space and 5 and 1/2 inches from the sternum".
[3] one exit wound "is in the anterior abdominal wall, below the xyphoid process and 1/2 an inch from the midline".

I know for a fact, directly from a family member, that Russ Butterbach took a ‘souvenir’ from the LHR crime, which was either a shell casing or bullet, I can’t recall which, it’s been years since I talked with his family member. That could explain missing evidence from LHR murders

Hi Mike, yes Mr Rodelli said Butterbach may have taken a casing. Now we know why this case won’t be solved with coppers taking memorabilia from a murder scene. You couldn’t make it up.

All the links I posted on my site for your Zodiac podcast are all totally useless again. Have you removed them from the internet. It’s easier to find Zodiac than your excellent podcast series. Cheers.

No, there is another option and the most likely one, it went sailing off into the distance.

Yes, that’s what I meant – not recovered.

Ah, I see.

We still have the question did he actually mail a bullet. That would be interesting new information, though apparently it’s been out there since this video first came out in 1995. Not sure what significance it would carry, other than confirming he was responsible for the attack.

I’d like to know how they determined it was from the same pistol used in the attack. If I remember correctly, the ballistic tests couldn’t confirm exactly what type of gun fired the bullets, it could only exclude certain ones and they weren’t really sure if it was a rifle or hand gun.
