LE discussing the tips they get from the public, the kind of people they wind up investigating, and rampant speculation about who the Zodiac really was/is.
He killed Stine, a lone male, after being accused of only preying on couples. Here they accused him of being "homosexual" and then over the next few years he’s tied to murders involving the rape of victims (such as Judith Hakari and the Santa Rosa hitchhikers). Perhaps the gay accusation triggered another MO change.
The armchair psychology from some of these cops is cringe-worthy at times (I even wonder if parts of the article were fabricated), but two aspects that leapt out at me:
– The notion of separate writer & killer gets brought up on the internet every couple of weeks like it’s a brand new idea, but here’s somebody talking about it in 1969.
– Some unnamed Hall of Justice personage (IIRC) was convinced that Zodiac was from S.F. — NOT Vallejo — and was someone who knew AND fit into that particular neighborhood.
On a related note, I had semi-forgotten about the Avery article with the "latent homosexual" comments…I’m not a forensic scientist, but I’m pretty sure there isn’t actually a gay way of wielding a knife, lol. Not sure if SFPD was trying to rankle Z or if Avery embellished what was actually said. At any rate, most of these vintage analyses circled back to a sexual insecurity of some kind.
Anyone have more on the 143 firearms mentioned in the article?

The most recent data on serial killers has indicated that they kill close to home at first and then expand their "killing grounds" as they gain more confidence. Considering the first two crimes took place near Vallejo, I think one could conclude that Zodiac lived in the Vallejo area.
At any rate, most of these vintage analyses circled back to a sexual insecurity of some kind.
And the "sexual aspect" claims are still made today despite absolutely no evidence to back it up. Yes, many if not most, serial killers had some kind of sexual deviance, Zodiac presented none of that.

I chased after Zodiac for years with this same concept, and while I think it is overwhelmingly true usually, I used the same method to chase after the Golden State Killer, and he clearly defied this method. But he was a wild card, because as a cop, he knew this method was likely, so he struck in areas that were NOT super close to home

My best guess with Zodiac, he lived in Vallejo(within 5 minutes from BRS park, or within 5 minutes where he called from afterwards)and worked in SF.

If his attacks mainly happened on weekends and holidays it could be because he needed the margin to find the right opportunity to attack and retreat/dispose of evidence, or because he had to travel a certain distance to be far away enough from his home.
