Dieter Dengler was a POW in Vietnam who experienced torture similar to what was mentioned in Zodiac’s "Little List" letter.
After his escape he resided is San Francisco. Certainly, his story was mentioned in the S.F. newspapers…and around the world.
I mentioned in another thread about his name being "13" characters..not saying he was a POI, just may a clue…the end of the "My Name is does end in Nam".
I posted about it at the ZK msg board, but for the life of me, cannot find it now. It was one of those posts where you think you are the first to discover something, come to find out you were not.
The movie "Rescue Dawn" with Christian Bale was based off of Dengler’s story.

A nice find and definitely a possible influence for Z’s ideas of torture for his "slaves in the afterlife" (although I don’t think he was really serious about the whole slaves idea). What would this say about him if he chose to borrow the experience of this poor man? I really don’t know other than that Z was a jerk, which we already know.
Tahoe, I honestly love it when I think I’ve discovered something new and find that someone else has already thought of it. I’ve had that experience a bunch of times and to me it’s just a confirmation of each other’s work and of the idea… or it should be anyway.
Yup nice find.
I’m curious if and when his story was mentioned in the newspapers at the time. I do think it’s a very good, and who knows maybe even ‘The’, source for Zodiac’s words in the little list.
I’m wondering though would these stories have came out through other ‘Nam sources at the time. I know this guy was the only one to escape a POW camp but were other’s perhaps liberated from them prior to that with similar stories of torture methods and did they make the papers?
EDIT: Although it was ’66 wasn’t it that this all happened for him? Probably too early for there to have been others prior to it?
As for this.

I have no idea what you mean. I have never experienced nor have I every seen any evidence of it in any posts, anywhere on the web.
We had a thread on this guy at the old site

Yes, I didn’t read it though because I thought it was just a thread about the movie Boogie Nights. Oh come on, someone else must have though that …I’m going to to hell lol.
What were the years was he in Vietnam? Because he would have had a small window to commit these crimes if he served.

Phil, looks like he escaped from his captors in Vietnam on 6/29/66 and remained with the U.S. Navy until 1968, presumably in the U.S. Tahoe’s not claiming he’s a Zodiac POI (I was little confused on that as well). His publicized Vietnam experiences are simply being considered as an inspiration for Z’s torture ideas in his Little list letter.

I was able to find an article the tells a little about his story but there is not much detail. It says in the story that Dengler did not want to reveal much because of the POW’s that were still being held captive. I imagine the same would hold true for anyone else that may have escaped later.
Wasnt there an article that ran about him in the local papers the week before Zodiac sent that little list letter? Or am I getting my dates mixed up?

While it is almost possible anyone could be Zodiac at this point I did not mean to imply he was Zodiac. Sort of like the My Name is "JacktheRipper"…we know Zodiac wasn’t Jack the Ripper, but possibly influenced by him.

Seagull–thanks for the articles. Wasn’t the San Mateo Times the one that used "The Times" like what was glued onto the the Pines card?

In a word, yes!
For those interested, I would highly recommend Herzog’s documentary about Dengler, "Little Dieter Needs to Fly." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0145046/
Makes a good companion piece to Rescue Dawn.
