I was bouncing around earlier and reading various things. Ended up on Ricardo’s site and was reading through the various sources that have surfaced regarding the ‘Red Phantom’ moniker. I’ve read the news article before about the kid sending anon messages over his fence to his neighbor regarding his cat.

Did anyone ever find out who this kid was?

I looked through a few news articles on this and can’t seem to find that the 9 year old boy was named. This is from The Long Beach Press Telegram Dec. 29, 1947 and is much like all the other syndicated articles on the story.

Thanks Deb,

Yeah I wasn’t sure that the name of the kid had ever been mentioned. I’m not saying there’s anything in this but isn’t that odd behavior for a nine year old? I mean, to send these messages then mention a 3 split in the clues? or a differentiation of 3? That seems quite involved or at least thought out, and from a nine year old? Wish we had more on this. Would make him 31 ish in 1969.

Well, a look through a 1947 Albany CA city directory might help. There is no address listed in any of the articles I saw but the last name of Keating might help to figure it out. It would be a shot in the dark getting the right Keating though. Perhaps a newspaper more local to Albany would give the address, too. None of the newspapers I saw were local.

Good idea, if you can find out the address of Keating, we can then check out his neighbors. It seems like a tough task, but hey, all we have is time, right? Hell, maybe we can even find a surviving relative of Keating and ask them about the incident. I guess the kid with the Red Phantom persona would have been born circa 1937-1938,most likely 1938

Here’s the same article with the word CLUSE, misspelled as ‘CLEWS’, apprently, the 9 year old spelled it wrong.

Weird. I think I remember someone pointing that out before and that it wasn’t uncommon for it to be spelled that way back then, even in newspapers. Still very zyncy though.

EDIT: Hmmmm don’t pigeons navigate by Magnetic North?

Trav you are correct about the word "clew" having been used way back when. The 1941 detective magazine article I posted about Alfred "Bud" Lord on the old board used that spelling not only in Lord’s article but in the other articles in the magazine.

You are welcome to move that article here, if you wish. I tried but had trouble with the sizing.

Hey,check this out:
http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/OBIT … 969142.php

I had heard of people theorizing that the ‘red phantom’ was a name of a wrestler, but this wrestler that used that name was from the SF bay area, and maybe was an influence on a young 9 year old kid?

A ‘red phantom’ from Albany sending anonymous letters using the word ‘clew’? Definitely interesting… Z had used the word as well (‘I was leaving fake clews for the police’; Nov 9th 1969).

‘Clews’ is a nautical/marine term:

I could find a Linda and Bill Keating in the 1957 yearbook of Albany High School..

And there is a Marine Elementary School as well..

Zodiac used this term,"red Phantom" in July 74. Two months before, in May, newspapers ran a story about a "record breaking firebee drone" that was not going to be flown any longer. It was Nicknamed "the red phantom" by Aerospace defense command pilots.

Holy Smokes!!!!!!!!!!

I was on IMDB in the Zodiac discussion forum, and they were talking about the pigeon boy letter. Part of the discussion was Ducking, who is a member here and maybe he will chime in.

The other person mentioned that he had located a WILLIAM J. KEATING, age 59, in Vallejo, which is the same name of the guy in the pigeon boy article. Just for shits & giggles, I did a background check on that 59 yr old William J Keating, and looked over his Relatives, and guess who two of his Relatives are……

Leo E Suennen age 88 & Leo Suennen age 59……WOW  I mean, what are the odds????? This deserves further research

In 1970, a William J. Keating & Hilda M. Keating living at 219 Hampshire St Vallejo CA

I had found this same name at the same address back a month ago in this thread:
http://zodiackillersite.com/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=1794

Adding a bit of confusion, is that in the 1971 Vallejo Directory, there is a Geraldine M. Keating, widow of William J. Keating living at 70A Muller St, Vallejo.

The Father that was living at 219 Hampshire was this guy:
NAME: William J. Keating
BIRTH: 6 Jan 1925
DEATH: 17 Oct 1987 – Vallejo, Solano, California, USA
CIVIL: California

On a side note, maybe same Family or not, I also found a BigWig within the SF Bay area Newspaper scene. A WILLIAM J. KEATING was VP of Combined Communications Corp. They owned the Oakland Tribune, which seemed interesting. Also, there’s a William Keating park in Vallejo

This one was weird too(although he was William C. Keating): http://www.corbisimages.com/stock-photo … r-lobotomy

Yeah, that’s pretty crazy. As for my part, we’ve just been trying to find any info about the people from that article. and honestly, kind of hitting a brick wall. I know what you know.

We got some guys with the same name as the neighbor from the article, maybe him, maybe related, maybe not.

That would be such a huge, super coincidence that Darlene is killed by a Guy that called himself RED PHANTOM and a Guy that is related to her Family, had the same name of the guy in the article. Worth digging into
