The InSight podcast just released an episode on Cheri Jo Bates. On the podcast the guest host stated that he found a case of a Jane Doe in the Riverside area that matches the description on the desk top poem. The victim was found two months after Cheri Jo but was believed to have been murdered prior to her. I had never heard about this victim. Has anyone else? I apologize if this has already been discussed.

Did they offer anything that would allow for further research?

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

No and I can’t find anything online, but I did send a message to the podcast. Hopefully I’ll hear back.

Thanks…look forward to hearing more. It’s a shame they didn’t offer a name!

She’s a Jane Doe. She was never identified, per the podcast. What was stated was that she was found on Dec 9th, 1966 by hunter "on the underbrush of a cliff". She was wearing a red dress and badly decomposed and they believe she was killed 3-4 months prior. The victim had no id on her and was never identified.

I can’t find anything either, but he never said Riverside. It was in the area but he didn’t give an exact location. I’m still waiting on a response. I’m also interested in finding out if he saw it in an actual newspaper article because if that’s the case she may have been IDed later.

Could it be this person?

The date is a bit different (found on Dec 18th) and the location is Tiburon. Found by a hunter, wearing a red dress. As for NamUS, there aren’t other Jane Does for California in 1966 than this one. Also none that match on Doe Network.

"The Lady in the Red Dress" has been discussed in the past and there are a couple of articles about her at the bottom of this page-

Thanks Seagull…I had my mind on Southern Cal, but had forgotten about that thread. I still think what is more interesting than the red dress is the guy who stabbed the girl at RCC not too long before Cheri…and she didn’t die.

I assumed Southern CA as well. I don’t see how a murder in Northern CA a month or so before Cheri Jo would be linked. Unless they are trying to say her boyfriend was involved, but from what I can tell there’s no reason to believe he was. He would have had to hire someone since he was in northern CA at the time. Thanks Seagull.

Suzie: As we all know, tomorrow marks the 51st anniversary of Cheri’s death. This is an especially gloomy day for me. Back in ’91, I approached an editor of the Riverside Press-Enterprise, and asked her if there’d be a 25-year article re Cheri’s death. Apparently she wasn’t up on the local history, as she was surprised by my request, but promised to "investigate the possibility." True to her word (sort of) the R P-E published an article on Cheri on 10/30–even mentioned my name! Last year, I tried again with the P-E, but received no reply. I guess they figured no one was interested anymore… .

He did say December 19, 1966(hard to tell by the British accent), so it is likely that the host was referring to the one found in the red dress in northern CA
