We received the following messages via our website from a person who would not like to be named but whose contact details are known to us. We are sharing this information with the person’s kind permission:
"The following incident may mean something or it may mean nothing. In February 1968 I was a student at RCC. I was in the foyer of the old library which at the time was located in the old quadrangle. I was seated in an old single seat wooden desk located near the east entrance reading a book on skiing when I noticed some strange cyphers carved into the desktop. Some were signs of the astronomical zodiac and others were delta triangle symbols and some were circles with crosses in them. Others were letters written backwards. They were intricate and precise and someone had spent a lot of time carving them. At the time they were just a curiosity to me, devoid of any meaning, as the zodiac killer and his cyphers would not see the light of day until one year later. Bates was murdered just 14 months earlier less than a block away. I never followed any of the news about the zodiac at the time and I remember that the Riverside police dismissed the Bates murder as a zodiac victim. It was only a few days ago after watching the movie Zodiac and viewing the cyphers for the first time did I make the connection. I am sure of the date of February 1968. The winter Olympics in Grenoble france was just beginning and I was interested in alpine skiing so I checked the book out of the library on skiing. After 45 years this is colder than cold. Like I said perhaps it means something or perhaps it means nothing."
And following our reply:
… "I see little chance of ever recovering that information. Like I said, at the time the cypher was just a weird curiosity to me because the zodiac was totally unknown to the world. I was amazed that someone had spent considerable time carving the intricate cyphers onto the wooden desk. I clearly remember the circle with the cross inside, delta symbols, backward letters, and some of the signs of the astronomical zodiac. The old library was shut down in 1969 and moved to its present location. The old library was located in the east section of the old quadrangle and it still exists but I have no idea what it is used for today. The desk was the kind you would find in a classroom of the 1930’s and 40’s and probably junked by now. Like I said Bates was murdered less than a block away 14 months earlier. I had heard of the zodiac killings but didn’t pay any attention to the case especially after the Riverside police said there was no zodiac connection. It was only after I watched the movie zodiac on tv a few weeks ago and saw the cyphers did I make the connection."
While the chances of recovering the information appear to be very small indeed, we wanted to share this exciting information nevertheless.
Roland, thanks for sharing. Interesting,and sounds familiar. I remember reading before about somebody seeing code like symbols on a desk in RCC.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Since our contact made the Z connection only recently, there must be at least two persons remembering the same, which adds reciprocal weight to the observations. Do you remember the source of your information and do you see a possibility to find out what happened to the old RCC furniture? We would love to study the code …

I honestly can not remember, but it was not from very long ago. I will poke around and see if I can find it. I think it may have been written someplace on the net(or maybe even by a member on a forum)I remember them describing that "somebody had taken alot of time to do it" almost exactly as this person described it to you

The person who posted on here is almost certainly the same person who contacted Roland, or someone is copying someone else. Both writings mentioned remembering the date because of their interest in skiing and the Winter Olympics. So unfortunately we don’t have two different people corroborating the same story.
I remember seeing a picture of Cheri Jo at RCC that had a "zodiac" symbol drawn on the blackboard. Did anyone ever get to the bottom of that? Maybe there was just some students that were into astrology…
But of course if Z did in fact carve onto a desk, it would be perfectly plausible that he would have done it more than once, so this is believable to me. But I do have some problem because if the Z is making ciphers and using the Z symbol in Riverside, why not include that with the Bates stuff? Unless he didn’t do this until 68 and hasn’t yet "become" Zodiac… in other words Zodiac was from Riverside and still there at least up to the time just before his murders in Vallejo. Interesting stuff.

I pointed out that dot inside the circle years ago over on ZKF, but was ridiculed,and shrugged off. Most people thought it was a knot or imperfection in the wood of the desktop. I am not sure if they are right,but it certainly looks like the cipher symbol
