I drive through Riverside nearly every day. If we can put together a concise list of what we’re looking for, I’ll stop by RCC and make scans/take pictures.

Very nice of you! :)

Expressions was published from 1959-1962. But we don’t know exactly what Expressions was, or if Ross was at the Library then. Isn’t that way too early? What is the timeline for Ross at RCC?

The Spectator was an annual publication, from 1966-1971. But it looks like there were two editions for the 1966-67 school year. Cheri Jo was killed in October of 1966, so those two volumes would be a good place to start. Again, the timeline? Possibly the 1968 edition, maybe, but probably not any later than that. Didn’t Ross move to Santa Cruz in late 1967 or early 1968?

Note that the person who entered the dates wrote: "No more published?"

What creative writing journals that were published, if any, between 1962 and 1966 and not in the computer database. However, there may be something on the shelf near to The Spectator or Expressions that was never entered into the computer. When I looked for old cryptography books in the humongous Kansas University library, I found some on the computer and many more next to those on the shelf that did not appear in my computer search. The librarian may be able to assist us before you go there so that you don’t waste a lot of time. I would be a little bit surprised if a junior college lapsed and did not publish any student creative writing journals for a period of 4 years.

Thank you.

The librarian I’ve been working with got back to me with this:

Because I am still on vacation, I texted a staff member who was likely not vacationing and asked her if she had time (because we should only be working on things that “contribute to student success”) to search through the library archives.

She searched through a homemade name index that our library students created for TigerTimes and Viewpoints, plus she did a hands-on search of other sources. Here is her report:

"There is no listing of Ross Sullivan in the Tequesquite, 60-66 (when it stopped being published, word search Sullivan).

There is no listing of Ross Sullivan in The Spectator. (word search Sullivan, 66-67)
I skimmed the index of authors of 68 and 69 of The Spectator, and no listing there either. (they are not yet digitized)

The library has Expressions, 59-62, in the archives. I searched just now, and there as no Ross Sullivan listed as an author. Expressions is like the current Muse, so I don’t think he would be a subject in a writing there. Expressions are not yet digitized.

There is no listing of Ross Sullivan in the author index of Viewpoints/TigerTimes, 60-69. (search done by scrolling down author index)"

Sorry that the library’s efforts were not very fruitful. You are certainly welcome to visit our library but I would wait about 6 or 7 weeks for the parking situation to settle down.

I’m starting to wonder if RPD already has the relevant journals (between 1962 and 1966) in their possession for the investigation. I asked the librarian if there are other journals published during that period that we haven’t yet learned of.

You’d like to think so. They did look into RCC, of course.

Any progress in the RCC Library search??

For my part, I am going to wait a few weeks per the librarian’s advisement regarding the hectic start of the term at RCC. It also looks like there isn’t any material attributable to Ross Sullivan, though I will try to make copies of all the student literary journals regardless.

Thanks for the efforts Barry, even if there’s nothing in there for Ross, maybe you will find some other nuggets

Barry, do you think it would be possible for you to get copies of all the Riverside Press Enterprise articles written about Cheri Jo’s murder? There are a couple that have been made available online but I’m pretty sure not all the articles have been posted. I would be especially interested in the article written when the Confession letter was sent to the newspaper and Riverside PD. I would also be interested to know if the newspaper published an article about the desk poem.

Sure. Looks like UC Riverside has the newspaper on microfilm.

The newspaper must have printed it. That was mentioned in that magazine article about them getting it from the "Riverside newspaper".

Hi Seagull, just wanted to let you know that I haven’t forgotten about this request. The old newspapers are located in "special collections" which are only accessible from 10-4 on weekdays. I have to wait until I have some time off from work to stop by, but it’ll get done.

Bumping this. Did this ever happen? Tiger Times or Nightimes would be the publications of most interest, in my opinion.
