So I haven’t seen this article before, but if only 143 of these were sold in the area in the prior 3 years of the Zodiac killing, why wouldn’t they check out all 143 purchasers? I understand Z could have bought this gun anywhere. The article says that they checked the handwriting on all the required licenses for purchasing this gun for matches with Z writing which tells me they have the registrations of these. I wonder if any of the suspects the forum has come up with match any of the known registrations of that time for this gun. I would imagine Z changed his writing from his daily writing so they most likely could not find a match, but would the FBI still have these registrations, or copies, on file to sort through the names? FYI, that is the syndicated version of the Keith Power story in the Chronicle, "Lawmen Pool Their Zodiac Clues", seen here: http://www.zodiackillersite.com/viewtopic.php?f=94&t=1193

I was just looking at the gun angle today, thinking it was possible that Z would try and sell his guns as soon as he used them in a murder, and I checked some newspaper classifieds following the murders-no luck

I’m not sure what Cal. gun regulations were in 66-69 era but pryer to the jFK assasination you could mail order a rifle, pistol
and you could get some replacement barrels or interchange them .
the grocery stores had a green stamp program and one of the most selected item was guns.

Right…but I am solely talking about the ones from the article…143 of them. Are these public record since they are mentioned in the case? What if one of them matched a suspect that has been mentioned?

Kinda think this is a valid avenue to pursue…

Agreed and would be nice to get a hold of that list.

They did mention, ‘PERMIT APPLICATIONS’in the article, so it seems as if it was not as simple as walking in to your local grocery store and buying that gun. Another strategy would have been for them to check with local gunsmiths, dealers, shooting ranges, etc for clues,I wonder if they did that?

Also, Z wrote in a letter, ‘BEFORE THE BAN WENT INTO EFFECT’. I wonder if that was truthful, or an attempt at misdirection on his part, so they wouldnt try to track it???

Yeah….saying that directly in a letter is odd. It isn’t like that info was needed for anything.

It’s a fabulously mangled version of the Power article, if that’s what it is. "The" (?) 9mm goes from being used in two crimes to being used in four?
The Power article was bad enough – it needed to be further "enhanced" and then syndicated? Oy vey.

i’m pretty sure any obvious clues he left were red herrings. no one would intentionally write down things that would lead to their capture. he made a point of writing about his techniques for evading capture after the stine killing, which was the killing where he left the most evidence. i don’t think he did that to help LE, but rather to confuse them as to the reliability of the evidence they had.

no one would intentionally write down things that would lead to their capture.

Why? Because its the general consensus? Now wouldn’t that be the perfect thing to do?

Soze

why? because nothing he wrote down that could lead to his capture has been proven truthful or lead to his capture. it wouldn’t be the perfect thing to do, it would be an incredibly dumb thing to spend inordinate amounts of time evading capture only to write down, and mail to LE, things that would facilitate your capture.

very interesting article..i do give warm support to the total number of 9mm guns sold..back then 9mm was basically a european round with most popular prolly being the browning high power..i bet they were checked..it would not have been a huge undertaking as the state by that time had all buyers info..personally i see Z buying on the street..he would not have made the mistake of walking into a local gunshop or he bought them years earlier me thinks..good post-god speed

He could have bought his guns out of state. Nevada and Arizona have relaxed gun laws, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Z went out of state to buy weapons so they couldn’t be traced to him.

Well Z mentions mail ordering everything, and while that’s a possibility for a lot of it, couldn’t that just be another ruse by him? Maybe he really did travel a lot and bought it all on his travels.
