Question: What is going to be done, if anything, with all the info this site accumulates? Will conclusions be reached, and authorities–or book publishers–notified? I’d hate to think we’re just spinning our wheels.

Spinning wheels basically but getting knowledge out to all since this website is public. You never know who will see this. maybe a Law Enforcement investigator still interested in the case. Maybe a individual that can add important information to a suspect. I don’t think it’s in vain! Maybe this case won’t be solved till 30 plus years from now but something here posted may have help to solve it!

I know one thing you catch more fish using a hook with bad bait then never having a line in the water.

I agree, as I don’t feel it’s in vain. Sometimes I think we are helping set the ground work for a future generation to read & solve. Or for that one person who does have some information and they read one of our posts (hope it’s one of mine,ha!) and the pieces fit and they found the Zodiac.
Another way of looking at it, is we’ve all learned a lot from each other & how to work together as a team. If I were hiring a research team, you’re the ones I would pick. Everyone brings something to the plate. Also it keeps our minds sharp & it’s much more fun then cross word puzzles.
So carry on, keep digging…

Maybe it’s the pessimist in me speaking or maybe I’ve been around for too long but I honestly think Zodiac message boards should have a *FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY* disclaimer attached. I totally agree with Zam and Stitch that a lot of new, helpful stuff is dug up all of the time but let’s face it… this is a 45 year-old cold case and our person of interest, if he’s still alive, won’t be around for long. The vast majority of 45 year-old cold cases go unsolved.

So… keep digging. It’s a noble pursuit, IMO, but one that’s not likely to succeed in the end. As a hobby, it’s better than stamp collecting. As an addiction, it’s better than smoking.

^^^Agreed.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

The ‘for entertainment only’ tagline is all well and good, until you remember that seven (possibly more) lives were irrevocably changed by a madman’s violent acts.

This board can’t be accused of merely ‘spinning its wheels’, though. Various members have made efforts to inform law-enforcement of their suspects and the evidence gathered against these people. That no success has been forthcoming is hardly the forum’s fault.

Yes…many members, myself included, have made efforts to contact LE, as well as family members and friends of victims and to further educate ourselves and/or offer information discovered at times on message boards. I do know Mary, Donna’s sister was able to lay some mysterious communiques to rest…thanks to a message board. (zk.com). So, you are correct…it’s not just for entertainment. But for the majority, I think it truly is…in a sense (or for lack of a better word?)

TBh, my first thought was " Are you new to the internet?" You think that people post on msg boards because they expect to get a book deal? If that is the case I’d be rich by now. And for police to read through the thousands of posts?

That would be a dick thing to say, so I won’t say that. well I already said it, but just ignore that…

"Entertainment" has a misleading ring to it. Do we get some sense of enjoyment out of what we do here? Sure, but that’s not to imply that it is fun and frivolous.

I think of it more as Documentation. Discussion of the case has led to, if not greater insight, then at least a greater awareness of the case and contributed to the wealth of public knowledge available. I think that is ultimately a good and valuable thing, even if it doesn’t lead to the case being solved or directly spur the actions of LE.

Also as hokey as it may sound, I like to think that we act as a sort of living witnesses and in that way honor the victims instead of leaving them resigned to history, or worse, forgotten entirely.

Now that, sums up our purpose in one respect and it does it very well. It’s a complicated and involved case, not least the case itself but also our involvement in it as researchers, hobbyists, those who are curious etc etc. At times we are careless, irreverent, wreckless but there are times when we are insightful and even brilliant. DK is right our attention to this is as a living witness. A beautiful way to put it my friend.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

Dear Sirs. Of one thing I am sure, have little knowledge about the case, read only two books on the subject, some of the topics and participate, for two obvious reasons, the difficulty in language and my ignorance on the subject (Zodiac), but I have tried to read everything and assure that you put, that to me is very interesting and has been adding much to my knowledge (, besides train my english of course). I have an open mind to every opinion. Congratulations to all.

My apologies for insinuating that this is just a source of entertainment or if that offended anyone. To me, it is entertaining in the sense of that solving a difficult puzzle is entertaining. Of course, there are very real life-changing consequences behind it and I wish this stupid case never existed. I readily admit that I sometimes lose sight of that fact so I appreciate the reminder. Just saying that I really have no illusions at this point that there will ever be an end game or that anything I post here is going to help change that.
