This is a great initiative, Morf and as soon as I get my affairs in order (don’t ask) I will gladly contribute to this project financially as well!

I’m not sure why, but this article stood out to me. I didn’t read through them all, actually barely any of them. Just quickly looked through the titles and names, but this stood out to me as being Zodiac like. Thoughts?

Wow Susie, that is very Z-like, creepy. Also weird I just looked up the name, WILLIAM C HELLER in SF, and there’s no indication that there was anybody by that name living there, at least not on Ancestry.com

There’s a William C. Heller who has lived in CA, he’s age 67, and no lives on the East Coast.

"I have enlisted the help of a researcher that I have hired in the past, and she is going to work on getting me copies of all of the letters to the editor published in the SF Chronicle & Vallejo Times Herald.

I am going to focus on Early 1968 up until the first Z letters were received in August, 1969. It’s my belief that Zodiac very likely wrote letters to editors of the SF Bay papers outside of his Zodiac persona, and quite likely used his real name."

Seems to me that this has been tried before.

I’ll go through some of them. I have a ton of free time, might as well do something constructive.

Mike,

I’m assuming by your response that you and Ed perused EVERY article from ALL Bay Area Newspapers for all of 1967-68???

That must have been several thousand letters, no??

Should we stop all attempts to solve the 340 as well because " it seems this has been tried before"? ;)

IBF

PS.
Have you had any contact with Bruce, Myles or their attorneys since Qvale passed?
Holly Horn might be willing to talk now also.

Holy crap. A friend of mine once told me a long time ago that he knew who Zodiac was (and I didn’t believe him, of course) and the last name was Heller. My friend’s grandfather was some sort of LE agent in the San Fran. area back then and a guy named Heller was his prime suspect, but nobody would take him seriously. I’m 99% sure he said the first name was Richard though. I have looked into all the male Heller’s I could find and never came up with anything interesting.

William C Heller 2200 Sacramento St. #1103 San Francisco in the ’69-’70 directory. It’s in between where Stine picked up Z and where Z shot Stine. About a mile and a half from each location.

There is a 67 year old Dr. William Heller in Aptos, Ca. The man wrote to the editor mentioned living in Detroit (maybe where he is originally from?) Here’s a 2011 obituary on a Warren Lane Heller who passed away in Aptos, Ca. He graduated from the University of Michigan and then worked at Ford Motor Co. for over 30 years. Among his surviving relatives there is a William Heller of Goshen, Conn.

Good find on the Heller stuff, and try to verify the name of the Guy that your Cop Friend thought was Z, obviously, the initials RH are interesting.
There is a ROBERT D. HELLER at 178 Funston in 1970 SF Directory, and Darlene had a entry in her address book in the 200 block of that same street,I forget the Guy’s name.
Also, an entry for a J. Heller listed at 2141 Geary in SF, although not sure how close that is to where Stine picked up Z

Wow- that really is interesting. Maybe William and Richard are relatives and one committed the murders and the other wrote the letters? Or at least assisted with the writing. It could also be possible that Richard liked the writing style of William and got the idea from him to write the letters and send them to the papers. All interesting possibilities. If you could verify the name, plus any additional info about the person and/or his family that would be great!!

Here are January, 1968 Letters to the editor, I forgot them yesterday. There was none for Feb as the paper was on strike I think. I am going to try and organize these some place in an order where people can simply read them and not search for them all over. This new one has a letter from an R.H. Hayden, which caught my attention. The RH, although interesting, I think belongs to a Retired Marine Colonel, R.H. Hayden who lived at 44 Sola Ave in SF

Hi-

No, Ed and I didn’t take a shotgun approach. I had a very specific game plan in mind that led to just one letter, not thousands.

What were the specific details of that letter that interested you Mike? What was you game plan?
