Or maybe a bad one, I will let you decide. I was thinking of a way to increase the interactivity of this site, which is already great by the way, but a way to boost its membership even more and get even more hits. You may not like the idea, but here goes. What we do is create a section on this forum called ‘Question Time’, ‘Forum Members Poll’, ‘Trial by Question’ or suchlike, you can decide.
Someone asks a question like, how did David Faraday’s ring get found between his fingers, why were there prints on the driver side door of Paul Stine’s cab, why did Zodiac take the keys and wallet, why did Zodiac wear a costume, why did he choose the crosshair symbol, why the 40 minute gap to the Springs and Tuolumne phone call, Did Zodiac live in Vallejo etc.
When somebody replies they have to, lets say, write between 10 and 20 line answers, no more, no less. I will take + place the answers in full and unaltered with full accreditation on my site to each person under their name, with the question as the title of the topic. I will then place a poll with the article and a link to the poll here on this site. We set a maximum of say 10 answers required (you decide), only first ten accepted. The poll will have the names of the forum members. Visitors to my site and this site vote on the best reply, answer or theory. The poll remains open for a set time ie 3 months, six months or year and we will eventually see in exact order 1 to 10, who convinces the audience the most or least. It’s like a trial by audience and tests your power of persuasion on a particular topic or specific question. Its interactive and gives forum members a platform to guage their skills. On any particular topic we take the first ten answers. Or more depending on its popularity. Morf13 locks the thread and voting begins. Of course two or more answers may contain the same ideas, the trick is the quality of persuasion and the skill of the author to convince the reader this is the best answer.
Eg on my site:
Morf13 ……………………………………………. 10-20 lines
Tahoe27…………………………………………….. 10-20 lines
Traveller……………………………………………..10-20 lines etc
Poll at bottom, with members names. Vote for best answer.
If you do not like this idea, that’s fine also
That sounds like a neat idea Rich, and would show how people’s opinions can vary greatly, or be very similar about this case.

Lets see if anyone else is interested, I just like the idea of testing each idea by jury, of sorts and gain a consensus on the most likely scenario.

Sounds good. let’s see what everybody else thinks

Can’t we do polls here? I can’t remember or even how to. I think this is/was one with the results shown.

Apparently we can … if we have the appropriate permissions. I don’t appear to have so maybe something isn’t enabled or I’m just stupid. Both equally viable lol.
How do I create a poll?
When posting a new topic or editing the first post of a topic, click the “Poll creation” tab below the main posting form; if you cannot see this, you do not have appropriate permissions to create polls. Enter a title and at least two options in the appropriate fields, making sure each option is on a separate line in the textarea. You can also set the number of options users may select during voting under “Options per user”, a time limit in days for the poll (0 for infinite duration) and lastly the option to allow users to amend their votes.

First, cool idea. Second, clearly polls can be implemented here at this site — but I wonder if they might get more action via more traffic if cross-pollinated at UKS’s site. The shortcoming of the poll you show here, Traveller, is that the total number of those voting is kind of slim. The percentages help, but a wider net might make for a livelier conversation. Of course a livelier conversation often attracts transient extremists. Still, those votes could balance themselves out with a wide enough variance — again, more likely with a larger pool of participants.
Yes that was the idea, voters from here and via my site. My site gets an interesting collection of ideas and this forum vice versa gets more traffic and increased poll results. I think two sites working in harmony can help each other in many ways.
Apparently, only morf13 can post POLLS here, as far as I can tell. I tried – several ways – but I never had the option. No "Poll Creation" tab exists.

I’ll have to see if I can figure out how to correct it.
EDIT: It was easy enough to find the directions-

Can I have 2 volunteers? One person who is a Moderator, and one who is not a Moderator, both please try and create polls within this thread to see if both mods & non-mods can create polls. I think both groups should be able to.

Looks good. The option is there now. Note – you have to either be the thread’s creator and edit your first post or create a new thread. You can’t just stick a poll in the middle of an existing thread. That’s explained in the board’s FAQ section – the bit I quoted earlier.
Short answer. Yup seems to be working now lol. Thanks morf.

Set up a poll on the first post in this thread, to vote anonymously on whether to proceed with this idea or not.
Hi
I voted "no"
Not because the idea is bad, actually the idea in itself is great, however IMHO I don’t think this forum needs lot of more traffic/more members
because it will fill the forum with people who don’t really know the case at all, or very little, which result in a LOT of time consuming posts with misinformation, lots of questions about basic knowledge about the case that they in fact should find out for them selves by reading about the case, and IMHO that is really frustrating.
And now we are at it, I am SOOOOOOO frustrated that SOOOOOOO much great information on the old forum is STILL not avaible here on this "new" one. And the info moved from the old forum to this "new", they are in these mile long posts and I’m not even sure that they are searchable, or are they?
Sorry to be so negative but I had to get it of my chest
Hi, english is not my first language so please bear with me
i think the solution could be a wiki. what we need is a repository for information where discussions and opinions on a topic are in one place. searching threads takes a lot of skimming to find information and i think people with a passing interest dont devote that kind of time. i use tiddlywiki for my personal zodiac repository but it’s not web based although id be happy to dump my entries in a public space.
