RE: Leaving and coming back 5 minutes later, did Z go home to get his gun before attacking at BRS? If so, can we pinpoint where Z lived as far as possible streets?

Assuming the car that left BRS before the attack was Z, and that he then came back about 5 minutes later, one possibility is, he went home to get his gun. If so, we can perhaps make a judgement as to how far he could have driven back and forth within 5 minutes. We could layout some streets, and see if any suspects, or POI’s resided in that area. I know Wier and I talked about this, and there may be nothing solid that comes from this, but I think it’s worth a shot.

If Z did go home to get his gun and came back, he either went very close by and took extra time getting his gun, loading it, etc, or he went further away and got his gun very quickly.

So first order of business, mapping out some streets nearby. Also, think about speeds he may have driven etc

The street names are hard to see, but as far as an idea of distance, BRS park, is about 2 miles from the road on the far left of the picture

Here’s a list of all the streets within this map:
(not sure if all these streets were there in 1969)

in no special order:

Pebble Beach Dr
Sawgrass Ln
Sunriver Ln
Eagle Ridge Dr
Chenin Blanc Pl
La Salle Way
Zinfandel Ln
Redwood Pkwy
Melody Ln
Penny Ln
April Ct
Cabernet Dr
Headwater Dr
Terrace Beach Dr
Rocky Shore Dr
Edgewater Pl
Symphony Way
Sonata Dr
Claret Ct
Ascot Pkwy
Tumberry Way
Birkdale DR
Lippizan Dr
Preakness Ln
Trotter Dr
Danley Dr/Darley Dr
Reynard Ln
Doncaster Dr
Pinto Ct
Dapple Dr
Suffolk Ln
Pacer Dr
Foothill Dr
Clydesdale Dr
Pinto Dr
Sterling St
Legend Circle
Turner Pkwy
Chantily Ct
Berkshire Ln
Gateway Plaza Dr
Admiral Callaghan Dr
Irene Dr
Celeste Ct
Stevie Ct
Glacier CT
Headwater Dr
Port Way
Silverado St
Burgundy Ct
Bordeaux Ct
Barbera St
La Salle Way
Montara Ct
Irene Dr

Not sure if I got every single St, but I got the bulk of them, and I think all of these streets were likely the ones in which Z could have driven to and back from within 5 minutes.

I’ve always felt that Z probably took a quick ride down the street to make sure no other cars were coming and ensure he had time to do what he needed to do at Blue Rock Springs. If you consider the timeline at Lake Herman Road, it becomes pretty apparent that he barely made it out of there without someone catching him the act.

Just including this map of Vallejo from 1969…..as you can see BRS was a fairly rural area at the time with little of the present road network or homes built back then.

Incidentally, when entering directions on Google Earth between the Police Station and BRS, the quickest route ( 9 mins) brings you north on the I-80 hwy and onto Columbus.
There has been much speculation on Z’s instructions in his call that night. What that demonstrates to me is that Z’s knowledge of Vallejo was not only great but instinctive.
He didn’t even have to mention the I-80 hwy, he knew that was the obvious route?

Roads and parkways such as North Ascot and Redwood were not there then and the only way onto Columbus from that direction was from the I-80 hwy ( 2 miles) or Admiral Callaghan lane approx one quarter of a mile closer

Wier, any way to blow that map up to see the street names? Also, which end of BRS did Z pull out of when he left, was it the end closer to LHR(south side), or the end closest to Columbus Pkwy(North side)?

I could be wrong Morf, but to the best of my recollection there was only one entry/exit to the parking area and that would be to the north side of the lot.
Upon turning south after the murder he would have to travel the best part of 2 miles ( Tennessee/Springs road area) before coming to a built up area. Most everything else came later.
I can’t do much with the map but will PM you another ( too large to post here) that will give a better perspective and we can work out whatever you need to know from there,

I suspect that Z was drawn to Lovers’ Lane sites as potential kill sites. In which case, he’d have scoped them out before going hunting–which would have included getaway routes.

He seemed to know the area well. That area was pretty secluded too, not much in the way of houses.

i think it’s more likely that he was driving around for a minute, scoping out potential witnesses. unlike lhr, brs was done on a warm celebratory (july 4th) night. much much higher chance of folks being out and about. really it was a stupid night to shoot people in a public park. we know that there were at least two or three cars of people in the parking lot in the fifteen minutes before and after the shooting so, again, zodiac seems extremely lucky.

For a long time I had thought similar, however after examining the possible routes and looking at old maps, it’s actually surprising how rural an area it was back then.
Mageau stated that Z had already parked alongside them for a minute before taking off! From many areas in Vallejo including areas south of BRS it would have been faster and easier to get to BRS via the I-80 and Columbus from the east if one was intent on going there.
If Zodiac went to check the area was clear, he could only check one route/way..while he’s checking that cars could be coming in the opposite direction…he turned south and the next road he would meet would be LHR which was 7 tenths of a mile south also virtually none of the housing estates that are there today were there then.
In any case, if ( and it is an If) there is a possibility that Z returned to some safe haven for a minute, it;s worth consideration and it could be one of the better leads in this case.

It’s downright remarkable how lucky he actually was.

LHR: Seems positively reckless given how many cars flew by – and pulled up at – that spot.

BRS: Same, with the added element of the date in question, where the likelihood of rowdy teens driving around was significantly higher than most other nights of the year. It didn’t last long before the "hippie types" came around to discover the victims – not to mention Andy and his girl.

The time span was more like 5 to 10 minutes, and again, that was a very secluded spot, there would not be much in the way of witnesses.

And if you believe James Owen, Z started shooting within seconds of him passing by
