Vallejo Police Detective Terry Poyser said his team has resubmitted two Zodiac envelopes to a lab for new analysis, hoping to test the results against an expanded pool of samples used in genealogy research. Sacramento County investigators also submitted a DNA sample from one of the crimes to GEDmatch, a public database of genetic genealogy people use to track down blood relatives.

The same method that caught GSK.

This is good news. How long is it expected to take?

I uploaded my own DNA recently after processing it on 23andme. I was able to match to other profiles in days. However, the GSK method (building a family tree) took months. Also, the Zodiac DNA might be 50 years old, but the GSK DNA was from a 1981 rape.

The million dollar question is: Is the Sacramento County statement in the news article accurate.

That would be arguably the biggest development in the history of the case.

The first question is: WHAT Sacramento County activity?

One guess is it could be letters (apparently authenticated) written to the Sacramento Bee in 1969.

Yay! I think this is the best possible way to try to solve this case.

The news writer could have also been referring to the Nancy Bennallack case, where they apparently obtained a DNA profile over a year ago.

Either way, it appears the writer didn’t understand the magnitude of what he threw out there.

My first thought was "wait, what?!"

Finally some news in regards to the DNA investigation! Exciting!

The million dollar question is: Is the Sacramento County statement in the news article accurate.

The first question is: WHAT Sacramento County activity?

One guess is it could be letters (apparently authenticated) written to the Sacramento Bee in 1969.

I’m thinking it might just be one way of saying that as the case is open in California Department of Justice, which is located in Sacramento, some of the evidence has been stored there, which would basically mean they’ve gotten a sample from one of the known letters or other items.

Of course it’s really cool if this is not the case and the sample is from evidence that has not been disclosed to public.

Almost definitely an error by the reporter. I think Tom Voigt confirmed that on the other site.

Because it sounded like massive news I felt a duty to share. As I explained, if there was already DNA good enough to upload to GEDmatch then we would be well on the trajectory to Zodiac’s identification.

Hopefully there is some truth to the report, like Sacramento submitting evidence for DNA testing like Vallejo PD did earlier this year, with the hope of using GEDmatch eventually.

Remember that the DNA evidence that caught GSK is nearly 40 years old.

DNA testing is also being performed on evidence from the Santa Rosa hitchhiker murders, of which Zodiac is a prime suspect.

Most of the SR victims, e.g. Franz Valley road, were found nude, some with only one earring (trophy). Not very Z style, imo. Nevertheless…one incident with "Vallejo Resident":

March 15, 1970
In Santa Rosa, a man frightened three separate women motorist in an identical manner, time was between 3-4 am. At 5.10 am the police stopped a man whose auto and license number matched their descriptions. He was identified as a Vallejo resident in a ‘1962-1964 white Chevrolet’. The man, about 23, was stopped after he had followed a woman right into the post office parking lot. He claimed that he was lost and looking for a way out of town. The police let the man go and escorted him out of town.
