All the cipher text letters are in the 340. The cipher text "uZ" here is also a bigram from the 340, if you want to add that to copied chains.

Yup. I’d noticed the UZ also.

What does everyone think about the layout of the cipher on this letter? I mean, it appears to be laid out to follow some vague grid but with spacing to allow certain things to possibly line up. I was considering realigning it. Tough to be accurate because it’s partly interpretive due to the untidy rendering of the original and possible copier distortion.

Is there a structure there? An underlying purpose for the arrangement?

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.

According to the FBI – or at least a page on their website – this letter is actually ZODIAC’S MOST FAMOUS CIPHER:

I think,if it really is written by Zodiac, it may have been an attempt to send them an ‘easier’ cipher, since after a month, the other one was not solved. Maybe is most important message in the 340 was contained in the first 4 symbols of the 1st line, and last 5 of the last line, which is why he might again, include this here in this letter if it is from Z. But the fact that now it is shorter, makes it even harder to solve, which could indicate that Zodiac was not an expert with ciphers, and did not realize that a shorter cipher was harder to solve

I’m going to post my thoughts on this. All in my opinion, but it is a thought-out opinion.

First, I have absolutely no doubt at all that the Qc37 letter:

And this one, Qc35:

Were written by the same hand. I think it is absolutely, undeniably indisputable. The handwriting is an exact match.

(NOTE: They both start with "This is the Zodiac speaking. I just…." and both also contain "I will kill")

I don’t believe for a second (and never have) that these are authentic Zodiac letters. They are hoax letters, or forgeries
if one is generous enough to call them that. The handwriting in both letters matches, but looks nothing at all like any of
Zodiac’s known writing. (Look at the lower-case A in particular)

In Qc37 it appears the hoaxer wrote a very few cipher symbols, and in Qc35 directly lifted a good deal of the 340 cipher.
So not only do we have a hoaxer, we have a very poor one with no creativity.

I don’t believe there is any point at all in trying to analyze the "layout" of the so-called cipher, or trying to solve it. It’s a hoax,
and a damned poor one at that. But on that note, and just because, I actually HAVE converted this into ASCII text that the
ZKDecrypto program could accept, and have tried to solve it, and of course got nothing. Here is the text:

HER><_6()OL59T/tWBi++z(pfuZ/668#OAIK;+

But IMO it’s all a waste of time.

Glurk, thanks for the input, some good points you raise. Hoax or not, I would love to see how the solution reads.

If it reads anything at all…

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

I think it’s interesting that qc35 was mailed on 12/7/69, and the very next day there’s a story about "Zodiac" calling an Oklahoma City radio station:

The timing is of interest, that’s for sure.

AK, can you apply the code used to decipher the 340 ie Graysmith’s/Obiwan/Kite’s solution to this above cipher as well as the "My Name is Cipher" and post the results?

OWK – Mainly using Harden Key the MNI proposed first stage solution is:

WCEDTSTHTOEWH

In the cipher section I go over my effort on this code. I now think it likely this was a hoax and just parts copied from the 340. Here is the result:

This was 12/7/69 from Fairfield.

Long time ago I gave a shot at the code I bumped the thread in the cipher section.

I see now that 3rd letter is not an A but likely an R.

I mostly stand by my code solving effort using Harden Key and other elements but I no longer endorse the extreme wide anagrams I used in my second stage.

The writing is decent but I honestly think the sloppiness of the cipher content is a huge red flag, IMO.

I agree. We can’t be certain but Zodiac seemed to be somewhat invested in his cipher stuff. Not just from the point of being functional but also somewhat aesthetically pleasing. From that alone these don’t make sense. They deviate from his usual style and are treated almost like throw away decoration.

Since you pointed out the way the letter K is written in the authenticated letters. I noticed that the are off. To me they look like they are not made the same way as Z’s other letter K’s.
