Red Phantom could certainly be anything from Wrestlers, to Comic Book villains, to Fish, but it could also be influenced by the ‘Pigeon boy of Albany’. The fact that Darlene was related to a Guy named William J. Keating, and that is the name of that guy in the 1947 story, is really fascinating.

From a motive perspective, it would make a lot of sense for a kid who writes a threatning letter and gets a taste for anonymous publicity, to carry on doing it.

I agree, but the big mystery is, was the guy threatened by the kid, the same Guy living in Vallejo that was related to Darlene?

Definitely worth further investigation.

Looks like "pigeon racing" was something people in S.F. liked to do as early as 1925

Can anyone find out if a man named Stanton Delaplane had a son born in 1937 or 1938? If he did, then I will explain further. I know that he had sons who had raised racing pigeons for a time, but I have not found names or DOBs on any of his children except for a daughter. Even if this is a dead end, Delaplane was still a very interesting guy who just happened to write for the Chronicle and was friends with Herb Caen. He also won a pullitzer prize. Any help would be much appreciated.

There are two kids with Delaplane’s son’s names born in ’42, and ’44 in LA County. They have the same mother, so they are probably related.

Could be that they are not Stanton Delaplane’s sons, if he had a son that was born in ’37 or ’38, and he was not born in California.

There’s an Andrea born in ’61 to a different woman then the above two guys, and she was born in SF. So maybe that is more likely his daughter?

Thanks guys I’m still looking. He has a daughter who was born in Texas (in ’42 I think) and she was a columnist for the S.F. Chronicle. I read something she had written that mentioned her brothers raising racing pigeons when they were young, so I have been trying to do some digging. Young kids with pigeons I figured I would at least see what I can find to pass the time at work. Kristin wrote about the history of Lake Berryesa. Stanton was well known as a writer and was friends with Herb Caen, and he wrote for the Chronicle as well. The thought had crossed my mind that maybe one of Kristin’s pigeon-fancying brothers could have been born in ’37 or ’38, but apparently not. Here’s an article written by Stanton in 1963 that mentions how he and his four children are in Mexico and he brought a college girl with to help with the kiddies. I thought it was strange that he would need help with the kiddies, because they would have all been in the late teens and early 20s in 1963. I wonder if he had other kids with another woman or what.

None of it matters in this case unless I can find a son born in ’37 or ’38 and I don’t think it’s going to happen.

EDIT: Stanton Hill Delaplane was the father, he was married to Miriam Lois Moore. Daughter Kristin was born in Corpus Christi, TX 1943.

Zodiac used this term,"red Phantom" in July 74. Two months before, in May, newspapers ran a story about a "record breaking firebee drone" that was not going to be flown any longer. It was Nicknamed "the red phantom" by Aerospace defense command pilots.

I was just back east visiting family and as I was boarding the plane I saw a sign inside the cabinet that said "C & D Zodiac Huntington Beach, CA". I looked it up and the firms name is actually Zodiac Aerospace. They have been around since 1896 under a different name and changed their name to Zodiac in 1911. They are a French company that had locations all around the world including several throughout California; however I don’t know when those locations opened. Maybe Z had a connection to that company and that’s how he knew the name before it came out in the newspapers.

Edit* I just noticed it was two months before the the article was run; however he may still have had a connection or admiration for the company.

Me and a friend have been researching Zodiac Aerospace. They are the ones that make the Zodiac watch that Arthur Leigh Allen had.

And check out their old logo…

Let’s try and stay on topic about the pigeon/red phantom incident. There are a couple threads about the possible origins of the Zodiac name/symbol

My bad! Is there a thread for the Zodiac watch company? I can’t seem to find one. And I was wrong anyways. Zodiac watch company had a model called "Aerospace" but the two companies were not connected.

But back on topic, I have a name I am checking out for "Pigeon Boy." I think he may have been a year older that the kid in the articles, but not 100% sure yet. Have another name that I believe is the correct age. Still researching.

Sorry- The reason I put it here was because my original thought process was that maybe the boy’s father worked for Zodiac Aerospace (and possible he did too either later in life or in the office growing up), but I guess I did not really explain that well in my original post. I was thinking that he could have known through his father at the time of the red phantom incident that they were working on a drone nicknamed that, then later on when he saw the article in the paper it reminded him and he signed the letter that way. That of course is if the boy was Z and if Zodiac Aerospace had anything to do with the drone. It could be where both names came from. I edited my original post and it made my point really unclear. Sorry.

Your post that I quoted originally spoke of aerospace pilots and that’s where my thought process came from.

Here’s an update of what I’ve been working on.

Fiendfilms at IMDB found out Keating’s address which was 918 Evelyn Ave, Albany, CA.

I looked in the ’40 census to see who his neighbors were. There were two next door neighbors with one year old sons, which would be around the right age for this "red phantom" kid.

Here’s what I came up with:

OK, for 916 Evelyn Ave the guy that lived there was named Bennett, first name maybe Frank? It’s illegible. He was 55 and worked at an oil refinery. His son was named John, age 1.

920 Evelyn Ave, looks like Gustisen? Justersen? Dustinsen??? Alex, 76. Son named Richard.

Across the street on Evelyn there weren’t any kids in the age range.

In back the address is 919 Talbot, but that doesn’t seem to be in the same listing here, so I’ll need to do another search for that one.

Here’s the page if anyone can make it out better than me:
